Erie PA News and Events for Monday September 12, 2005

On Labor Day, brothers Mike and Jack Gates kayaked across Lake Erie from Long Point, Ontario, to Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA. Last year they went across Lake Ontario.

The 2005 Albion Area Fair begins Tuesday September 13 and runs through Saturday, September 17, 2005. Admission is $5. For $7 you can buy a button and get in all 5 days. Parking is free.
The Guelcher Film Series returns for the season on Wednesday, September 14 with Schultze Gets the Blues. The film will be shown at 2 and 8 pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.
Behrend alumnus Brian Swahn will open this year’s School of Engineering and Engineering Technology Speaker Series at noon on Thursday, September 15 with a presentation titled “Technology Trends and Design Challenges for 45nm and Beyond.” His talk, which takes place in the Reed Student Union Building, Room 114, will address future challenges in integrated circuit development.
Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro Cortés will speak at Allegheny College at 12:15 pm on Friday, Sept 16 in Quigley Auditorium. Cortes, the first confirmed Latino Cabinet member in Pennsylvania history, will share his background as it relates to his career in politics, address current immigration problems and policies, and describe the role of Latino voters in the years ahead.
The Gannon University Schuster Program for the Arts presents the Erie Chamber Orchestra with special guests soloists Lisa Layman and Brent Weber at St Patrick’s Church on Friday Sept 16 at 7:30 pm. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

On Saturday, Sept. 17th,2005 , the McDowell Marching Band Aides will be hosting the 31st annual McDowell Marching Band Invitational. This year it will feature 20 high school marching bands from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York - making it one of the largest band competitions in the area. Tickets are $4 for students and seniors, and $6 for adults. Gates open at 3pm. In addition there will be a basket raffle, bake sale, and a full menu concession stand. Proceeds will benefit the McDowell Marching Band. For more information, contact Dave Hetrick at 835-5487.
Wayne State University Athletic Director Rob Fournier in the Wayne State student newspaper The South End: “Ask me where I’d rather be, Detroit or Erie” he says as if the answer to the question should be a no-brainer.
Mr Fournier: What does a Wayne State grad ask a Gannon or Mercyhurst grad? “Would you like fries with that?”
The Gannon men’s soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to four matches Sunday afternoon with a 3-3 double overtime tie against GLIAC rival Ashland at Gannon University Field. Iroquois grad Dan Howell scored two goals for Gannon. Howell could be the best soccer player this area has ever produced.
The Erie Otters Pre-Season Hockey Tournament will be held September 16th and 17th at the Tullio Arena. Daily tickets (includes both games) are $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under). Joining the Otters in this exhibition event at the Tullio Arena will be the Saginaw Spirit, Plymouth Whalers and Toronto St Michael’s Majors.

It's funny to read stuff mentioning both Erie and Detroit in the same paragraph. It's like my worlds are colliding. Anyways, I can say that living here in Detroit I can honestly say that if I had a choice, I'd be back in Erie. This place is horrible. As for Wayne State, is the de facto choice for Detroit residents --at least those who couldn't qualify or afford to go to U of M. Funny.

Living in the plains of Colorado also makes one yearn for Erie. The first gloomy, overcast and rainy day we had after moving back was so glorious.
