Pathwise Press has relocated to Erie. Welcome! Pathwise Press publishes chapbooks of poetry and fiction and the biannual literary/art magazine Bathtub Gin. Christopher Harter said that the next issue of Bathtub Gin will be published next month. The October issue will include the works of Geoff Herbach, justin barrett, AD Winans, Simon Percik, Gary Every and others.
The EPA announced that local scientists are being joined by nationally known sediment experts to spend the week collecting sediment samples from Presque Isle Bay. Scientists aboard the EPA research vessel Mudpuppy and Gannon University’s research vessel Environaut are implementing the first step in a long-term sediment monitoring and evaluation plan linked to the bay’s recovery. In 2002, DEP recommended and EPA concurred that the Presque Isle Bay Area of Concern be designated in the Recovery Stage, as the result of significant environmental improvement in the bay since the early 1990s. It became the first Area of Concern in the United States to be recommended for recovery status.
The state announced a $100,000 grant for environmental work at the former Kaiser Corp East 12th Street site. IFP North America (no web site) will create 301 jobs within three years on the site with the construction of a $65 million aseptic multi-fruit processing and juice packaging plant in Erie. IFP is expected to break ground later this year on the 300,000-square-foot facility on the former Kaiser Aluminum site, which is located in a Keystone Opportunity Zone. IFP plans to begin production in 2006. The company’s major product will be apple juice, as IFP will process about 7 million bushels of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and New York apples each year.
More than 750 Gannon University students are expected to volunteer for the university’s annual GIVE (Gannon’s Invitation to Volunteer Everywhere) Day on Saturday, September 17.
The 2005 Albion Area Fair runs through Saturday, September 17, 2005. Admission is $5. Parking is free.
The Guelcher Film Series returns for the season today with Schultze Gets the Blues. The film will be shown at 2 and 8 pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.
Behrend alumnus Brian Swahn will open this year’s School of Engineering and Engineering Technology Speaker Series at noon on Thursday, September 15 with a presentation titled “Technology Trends and Design Challenges for 45nm and Beyond.” His talk, which takes place in the Reed Student Union Building, Room 114, will address future challenges in integrated circuit development.
Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro Cortés will speak at Allegheny College at 12:15 pm on Friday, Sept 16 in Quigley Auditorium. Cortes, the first confirmed Latino Cabinet member in Pennsylvania history, will share his background as it relates to his career in politics, address current immigration problems and policies, and describe the role of Latino voters in the years ahead.
The Gannon University Schuster Program for the Arts presents the Erie Chamber Orchestra with special guests soloists Lisa Layman and Brent Weber at St Patrick’s Church on Friday Sept 16 at 7:30 pm. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

On Saturday, Sept. 17th,2005 , the McDowell Marching Band Aides will be hosting the 31st annual McDowell Marching Band Invitational. This year it will feature 20 high school marching bands from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York - making it one of the largest band competitions in the area. Tickets are $4 for students and seniors, and $6 for adults. Gates open at 3pm. In addition there will be a basket raffle, bake sale, and a full menu concession stand. Proceeds will benefit the McDowell Marching Band. For more information, contact Dave Hetrick at 835-5487.
The Mercyhurst women’s volleyball team (11-1) defeated Gannon (5-6) before nearly 250 fans at the MAC.
The Phoenix RoadRunners of the ECHL have agreed to terms with forward Cory Pecker. Cory was the OHL Overage Player of the Year after leading the Erie Otters to the 2002 OHL Championship.
