PENNVEST approved a $560,000 loan to the North East Township Water and Sewer Authority to design a wastewater collection system for the township where there are a significant number of malfunctioning on-lot septic systems. The wastewater will be transported to the treatment plant in North East Borough.
Doug Whiteman, a business news anchor and consumer news reporter for AP Radio, has been named Associated Press broadcast editor for Ohio. He is a native of Erie, Pa.
Yesterday must have been look up the population of Erie day. Every 10 years the US Census Bureau does a count. Their latest estimates, for July 1, 2004, were released August 11, 2005. The population of the City of Erie PA stood at 103,925. This was up 237 residents from 2000. The estimated population of Erie County PA now stands at 282,355 which is an increase of 1,512 since 2000.
The 2005 Albion Area Fair runs through Saturday, September 17, 2005. Admission is $5. Parking is free.
The Erie Farmers’ Market is open weekly on Thursdays from 9-4:30 in Griswold Park, West 13th and Peach Streets thru the end of October. Today they will have a Funky Tomato Contest. If you have a funky tomato-one that’s too big, too small, awkwardly shaped, bruised or dented, bring it today. Judging will be at 12:15 pm from the gazebo in Griswold Park. Additional Tomatomania activities include tomato sampling, live music with Sam Hyman and Chef-in-the-Market demonstration with Colony Pub and Grille.
Behrend alumnus Brian Swahn will open this year’s School of Engineering and Engineering Technology Speaker Series at noon on Thursday, September 15 with a presentation titled “Technology Trends and Design Challenges for 45nm and Beyond.” His talk, which takes place in the Reed Union Building, Room 114, will address future challenges in integrated circuit development. The event is free and the public is invited.
Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro Cortés will speak at Allegheny College at 12:15 pm on Friday, Sept 16 in Quigley Auditorium. Cortes, the first confirmed Latino Cabinet member in Pennsylvania history, will share his background as it relates to his career in politics, address current immigration problems and policies, and describe the role of Latino voters in the years ahead.
The Gannon University Schuster Program for the Arts presents the Erie Chamber Orchestra with special guests soloists Lisa Layman and Brent Weber at St Patrick’s Church on Friday Sept 16 at 7:30 pm. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

On Saturday, Sept. 17th,2005 , the McDowell Marching Band Aides will be hosting the 31st annual McDowell Marching Band Invitational. This year it will feature 20 high school marching bands from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York - making it one of the largest band competitions in the area. Tickets are $4 for students and seniors, and $6 for adults. Gates open at 3pm. In addition there will be a basket raffle, bake sale, and a full menu concession stand. The Erie Otters Pre-Season Hockey Tournament will be held September 16th and 17th at the Tullio Arena. Daily tickets (includes both games) are $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under). Joining the Otters in this exhibition event at the Tullio Arena will be the Saginaw Spirit, Plymouth Whalers and Toronto St Michael’s Majors.
Franklin ( 0-2-0) faces Erie Cathedral Prep (2-0-0) tonight at 7 pm at Erie Veterans Memorial Stadium, 26th and State Streets.

Zach Bell’s goal with only five seconds left in regulation forced overtime and the Mercyhurst men’s water polo team went on from there to defeat Penn State Behrend 11-9 at the Behrend campus.
Two former Mercyhurst College men’s ice hockey varsity players, defenseman Jody Robinson and forward Rich Hansen, reported to NHL training camps. Robinson, under contract with the New York Islanders, reported to the Islanders training camp last Sunday for the second straight year. Hansen, a four-year center/left wing, reported Sunday to the training camp of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
