MTR Gaming began work yesterday on building a road to their property in Summit Township. The site will be the future home of Presque Isle Downs Race Track and (slot machine only) Casino, a racino. The actual groundbreaking could be held in the next two weeks.
Erie County’s seasonal unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent in August. It stood at 5.8 percent in July. The Erie unemployment rate stood at 6.4 percent in August of 2004. In the Meadville area the unemployment rate dropped from 6.4 percent in July to 6.0 percent in August. For the complete state data in pdf format click here.
On Tuesday Penelec agree to pay a $250,000 penalty over fires in Hastings and Erie. Alos, Penelec agreed to make changes to its Customer Assistance Program. Power at the residences that burned had been cut off by Penelec. In the Erie fire, two kids were hurt in a June blaze following termination of electric service. Police said the fire was caused by an overloaded extension cord running from another apartment.
Almost 1 million trout and eggs will have to be destroyed from the Allegheny National Fish Hatchery in Warren after fish there tested positive for Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN) - an untreatable, contagious virus. Almost 90 percent of the fish that get IPN will die from it and the others can infect other fish and their own eggs.
A college fair will be held at the Mercyhurst College Recreation Center on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 pm. Over 75 college representatives from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and other states will be on hand to answer questions from prospective students and their parents. Admission is free.
Gannon University will host a Graduate and Professional School Fair from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday, October 4. The fair will be held in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. Some 50 schools, representing more than 100 academic programs in areas like business, education, engineering, health sciences, law, the liberal arts, and the social sciences, are expected to participate.





The Mercyhurst and Gannon men’s soccer team will meet today at 4 pm at Mercyhurst.
Junior forward Lisa Casement’s ninth goal of the season, with under three minutes to play, gave the Mercyhurst women’s soccer team a hard-fought 2-1 win at Edinboro Tuesday before more than 100 fans. Mercyhurst improved to 7-2 overall while the Fighting Scots slipped to 4-5-2.
