Erie PA News and Events for Friday September 30, 2005

Posted by Dennis on September 30, 2005

There was a foul smelling oder in the air yesterday from Eastern Ohio to Western New York. It wasn’t natural gas. The best guess of the experts was that strong winds, which topped 58 mph, churned up low oxygen water from the bottom of Lake Erie to the top along with decaying plant and animal life.

Erie-Drewitz International (EDI), owned by the Erie International Airport and Erie Aviation, will take ownership and operation of Cottbus-Drewitz Airport in Germany in mid December. Cottbus-Drewitz is a former East German military air base. They will develop it into a trade center and cargo hub. Erie Aviation supplies parts for AirBus and already ships tons of parts to Europe every week. By filling up planes with other cargo and having an airport warehouse in Germany they can cut down their costs and provide low cost shipments to other companies.

Did you know that tomorrow October 1 was Cranberry Day in Erie? An act passed in 1841, imposed a fine of not less than $10, nor more than $25, on any person who should gather cranberries on Presque Isle State Park between July and September. The 1st of October was once known as “Cranberry Day,” a great event years ago. Large numbers of people would cross Presque Isle Bay the night before and remain until morning. The marshes were once full of cranberries.

What incompetent, witless, stupid, brain damaged moron thought it was a good idea for PennDOT to hold one of their useless surveys at rush hour on the Bayfront Highway? Traffic was backed-up over 2 miles from nearly East Ave all the way past the Sunrise Assisted Living facility.

The United We Stand Theater fall production, From the Blues to the Bible, is a musical comedy written and directed by Cheryl Jong. The Chautauqua Institution Fall Festival will be held September 30 through October 2. Join a celebration of culture, art, and the Lake Erie Coastal Region along with the second Quilting Around Chautauqua Festival. Over 500 quilts, speakers, raffles, contests, classes, fashion show, vendors, and demonstrations, artisans’ and craftspersons exhibits, farmer’s market exhibits and produce, children’s activities, clowns, animals, games, hayrides, Chautauqua County Corvette Club and more.

Ann Hampton Callaway backed by the Dave Stevens Big Band will perform Saturday, October 1, 2005, at 8:00 pm at the Mercyhurst Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets run from $15 to $30.

Vince Scott scored twice and added an assist to lead the Erie Otters to a 4-3 win over the Plymouth Whalers in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 4,201 at the Tullio Arena. Sean O’Connor and Brett MacLean scored the other Otters goals as Erie posted a victory in their second straight home opener. Andrew Hotham added two assists for the winners, who improved to 2-1 on the season. Jhase Sniderman got the win in goal. The Otters return to action Saturday when the Saginaw Spirit (2-1) make a visit to the Tullio Arena for a 7:30 pm start.

Jenna Yankowski, a junior at Penn State Behrend, was the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after going 3-0 at Number 3 singles and 3-0 at Number 2 doubles. Behrend is 9-2.

Your words for the "incompetent, witless, stupid, brain damaged moron" who thought it was a good idea for PennDOT to hold one of their useless surveys at rush hour on the Bayfront Highway were kinder than mine. Here I am trying to get to Janitor Supply to get some much needed supplies so I can do some work and I have to wait through 10 mph traffic from Cranberry to State street. Albeit most days when I'm trying to make deliveries and pick stuff up (generally get work done) I wonder what everybody is doing out on the road, but I wouldn't set up a roadblock to find out, and not at 3:00pm.

The rumor I heard is they were trying to find out how to improve traffic flow...it's a good thing they didn't ask me...you can guess what my solution for them would have been...and it might have been expletive laden. This mobile questionaire also shows how braindead they are. I thought if you worked at PENNDOT you were there because you might know something about transportaion and roadways. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how to improve traffic flow down there...too bad they didn't put more lanes in when they were building it in the first place huh? So PENNDOT, I guess if you can't be part of the solution you should be part of the problem...is that how that saying goes? I can't remember.
