RailPower Technologies Corp and Ocean Tug and Barge Engineering Corp announced a supply and licensing agreement whereby RailPower will license its technologies to OTB for marine applications and supply, through OTB, its hybrid power systems to tug and barge operating companies, tug and towboat builders and shipyards involved in the construction of a wide range of workboats. RailPower will supply hybrid and multi-engine systems in kit form and OTB will identify customers looking to retrofit or build new vessels who are interested in the economic and environmental benefits of RailPower’s hybrid systems. RailPower Technologies’ main engineering office is in Erie, Pennsylvania. They currently have 3 job openings in Erie: a Power Electronics Engineer, a Designer/Drafter and an Inventory Clerk.

Father Andrew M Greeley, the author and commentator whose works have sometimes jolted members of the Catholic Church, will speak on “The Present Condition of Catholicism” at the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center at 8:15 pm on Wednesday Sept 7, as part of the McHale Distinguished Speaker Series. Admission to Greeley’s lecture is free and open to the public. No tickets will be required.
Thursday, September 8 will be Nash Library Night at Jr’s Last Laugh Comedy Club and Restaurant. The club, 1402 State, will donate a portion of ticket sales from that night’s gate to the Gannon University Nash Library, which will use the money toward the purchase of books and materials. The Westminster Figure Skating Club of Erie will host two open houses in September to kick off its 48th season of skating. Skate for free at the JMC Ice Arena, 423 West 38th St, Erie, from 9:45 to 11:45 am on Sat, Sept 10 (ages 4 to 10) and from 6:45 to 8:15 pm on Tues, Sept 13 (ages 11 and up, including adults). Guests at the open houses can watch a performance and shop for used skates and skating clothes. New skaters can sign up for six weeks of introductory group lessons for the price of five weeks ($50). The 2005 Erie Marathon will be held September 11. The start/finish is in the Rotary Pavilion Area (approximately 3 miles from the entrance to the park) and the course will consist of two complete loops of Presque Isle State Park. It is certainly a Boston qualifier and has a course record prime to be broken. Those who expect a marathon time of greater than 5 hours will be required to start at 6:30 am with the rest of the field starting at 7:30 am. There will also be a 4-Person Marathon Relay, a Half Marathon and a 5K.
