1912 Erie Panoramic
A friend of mine who currently lives in California, sent me the link to this auction on eBay. The item up for bid was a 1912 reproduction of a panoramic photo of Erie. Here’s a small pic that links to a larger image;
Here’s a quiz for you, where exactly is this picture taken (both the shooting location and the visible area). My answer is in the comment section.
Although I had the winning bid on eBay, I’m sure the seller would produce copies for sale.

Here's my answer: I think the photographer took the picture from the top of the Mannechor Club building which is on 15th and State. The view encompasses from the club facing North and spanning to the West and East. The building with the word "Reliable" on it is where Jr.'s Last Laugh is and to the left is Union Station. You can also see the spires of the St. Peters Cathedral and St. Pauls Cathedral as well. Of course, my guess as to the Mannechor is subject to qualification as to whether it was built before 1912. I'm sure that St. Peters was built before then but not sure about St. Pauls. Notice the side road that cuts from Peach Street connecting it almost to State on 14th. That isn't there anymore but if you think about it, the parking lot behind Jr's is probably a remnant of that streets removal.

Isn't this same photo in the Erie Art Museum Frame Ship Gallery - by the elevators?

you can download a .tiff and get it printed at kinkos, or order a print.
there are many more historic pics of Erie arond the site listed.
That little street (Turnpike St.)is the only north facing street in Erie. My grandparants used to have a restaurant there in the little building, just to the west of Turnpike.

Thanks C-Rolla. Do you know far South Turnpike St. went or did it just connect Peach and State streets?

From what i can tell , looking at an old map, it goes pretty much the way you see it in the picture.
just Peach and State.

I have one of the original photos from 1912 but it has some water damage. We got it an an antique store a couple of years ago and we were told it originally hung in a bank. The originals are larger than these copies (that auction being only 2 1/2 inches by 16 inches). Mine is 10" x 58" without including the frame. I've seen some reproductions that are 8" high also, but none that were 10 inches high. I also have an antique colored panoramic postcard of that same photo. Also, if you click on the "posted by Linda" link below you should see (you'll have to scroll) the 3 sections (angles) of the panorama from the original at the Library of Congress. You have to remember it is 180 degrees flattened out. So the left one is facing left, middle straight ahead and right is looking to the right. The railroad is actually straight and is perpendicular to State St. The pictures they sold to the public back in 1912 didn't show these lines of the 3 segments of the panorama.

I just posted the scanned pictures of the panorama colorized 1912 postcard I have that is from the same picture that Dennis posted. It has the labels of the different buildings around town.
