WHEMCO has purchased Johnstown Corp, a manufacturer of steel products. WHEMCO owns Erie Forge and Steel. WHEMCO is a division of Cleveland-based Park Corp, which acquired the company in 1983.
The franchisee for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Western Pennsylvania is restructuring. The new plan by Metz and Associates includes seeking new locations to develop smaller, more cost-efficient stores. Among the changes are plans to possibly relocate some of its stores in Erie and other cities.
Nickelodeon announced the first winners of the “Let’s Just Play Giveaway,” an effort to help kids improve their schools’ or communities’ play facilities. Forty kids from schools and organizations around the country will receive $5,000 each. Clark Elementary School in Harborcrek and Grandview Elementary School in Millcreek were 2 of the first 40 winners.

Ridge of Erie will speak at the Turnaround Management Association’s Annual Convention, held at the Chicago Hilton and Towers, October 18-21.
The Erie County Redevelopment Authority has received a $89,013 grant for a “study to locate land to house a 680 dairy cow operation” around Wayne Township. $89,013? Seems this could have been done with $2 in quarters and a pay telephone.
October 1 was once known as Cranberry Day in Erie. An act passed in 1841, imposed a fine of not less than $10, nor more than $25, on any person who should gather cranberries on Presque Isle State Park between July and September. Large numbers of people would cross Presque Isle Bay the night before and remain until morning. The marshes were once full of cranberries.
The Erie Otters return to action tonight when the Saginaw Spirit make a visit to the Tullio Arena for a 7:30 pm start.
The United We Stand Theater fall production, From the Blues to the Bible, is a musical comedy written and directed by Cheryl Jong. The seven-performance show will opened last night and will run four consecutive weekends at the St Patrick’s Cauley Auditorium (215 East 4th Street) concluding on Friday Octover 21. All performances are at 8 pm and tickets are $8 or $6 for students and seniors.
Ann Hampton Callaway backed by the Dave Stevens Big Band will perform Saturday, October 1, 2005, at 8 pm at the Mercyhurst Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets run from $15 to $30.


The McDonald’s Junior Otters Kids Club Sign-Up Party is being held Sunday October 2nd from 11-1 at the McDonald’s Restaurant on Buffalo Road. Select members of the Otters are scheduled to be in attendance as well as Shooter, the Otters mascot.
Chris Campoli has made the opening day roster of the New York Islanders. Campoli was the 227th player picked in the 2004 draft when he had finished his junior career with the Erie Otters. Chris had 15 goals and 34 assists playing in the AHL last season which would be good numbers for a center or a winger but he’s a defenseman.
The Philadelphia Phantoms announced that Shawn Waskiewicz has been named the team’s Director of Sales. Waskiewicz spent five years with the Erie Otters where he most recently was the Director of Promotions and Special Events for the club. Waskiewicz is a 1998 graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in business administration and a minor in economics.
