The City of Erie completed the layoffs of 15 police officers on Friday. The layoffs of 12 firefighters has been delayed until next Friday. The City faces a budget deficit of $7-10 million for 2006.
For years the city pension plan went unfunded or underfunded. They money that was there wasn’t properly invested. The estimated amount for the city’s contribution to the pension plan for 2006 - $10 million.
Tuesday October 11 is the deadline for registering to vote in the November election.

Juilliard is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Dr Peter Mennin of Erie served in the US Air Force in World War II and then joined the faculty of the Juilliard School of Music. At age 24 he directed the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. Mennin returned to the Julliard as President and directed the world famous institution from 1962 until his death in 1983. Juilliard awards a Peter Mennin prize, for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music.
First National Bank of Pennsylvania (NYSE: FNB) announced that its merger with The National Bank of North East was completed at the close of business Friday.
Erie business leader William C Witkowski, owner, chairman, and CEO of Port Erie Plastics, has been named the Penn State Behrend 2005 Alumni Fellow. Witkowski began his academic career at Penn State Behrend and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering in 1967. In the mid-1980s he took a leadership role in developing the College’s plastics engineering technology program.
The Fourth Annual Walk to Make a Great Park Better will be held Sunday October 9, 2005 at Presque Isle State Park at 1 pm. In addition to benefiting Presque Isle State Park, money raised by the walk will fund three memorial scholarships named in honor of David Hanlon, Frank Pettinato Sr and Fran Kloecker Jr. To be eligible for the scholarships, the high school student must complete the scholarship application the day of the walk, participate in the walk and generate a minimum of $25 in pledges. The art galleries of Allegheny College will present the annual Faculty and Alumni Exhibit from Tuesday, Oct 11 through Wednesday, Nov 2. A public reception will be held in the galleries on Tuesday, Oct 11 from 7:30 to 9 pm. The art galleries will be closed Oct 15-18 for Fall Break. The exhibit will feature a variety of art works including drawings, sculpture, prints, photographs, video art, computer art and documentation of public art projects.
The Kitchener Rangers used four third period goals tonight to down the Erie Otters 5-2 before a crowd of 5,765 at The Aud despite being outshot 49-22 in the game. Vince Scott extended his point-scoring streak to five games (5-2-7) with a shorthanded goal and Mike Blunden had the other for the Otters.
Minnesota State upset the Mercyhurst women’s hockey team 2-0. Mercyhurst finished 0-for-11 in power play chances.
Michigan Tech erased a 2-1 first-period deficit with three unanswered goals in the middle stanza, then had to hang on to defeat the Mercyhurst men’s hockey team 4-3 in a season-opening non-conference tilt Friday night. Scott Champagne, Jamie Hunt and Kerry Bowman scored goals for the Lakers.
