A man was hit and killed by a train last evening. He apparently was trying to cross the track by Cherry Street when he saw an eastbound train coming. He ran out of the way of that train and was hit by a westbound train approaching on the next track.

Today is the last day to register to vote in Pennylvania for the November 8th election.

In 2004, Erie Insurance saw its largest decline in deer claim frequency (11 percent) since the company began its study, and the third straight year in which deer collisions declined. Still, deer pose a serious threat to drivers. At Erie Insurance, deer claims for 2004 accounted for 40 percent of all comprehensive losses. Most collisions with animals occur during the last week of October and first two weeks of November, and more than 50 percent of deer collisions take place between 5 pm and midnight.

James Sheehan, currently the vice president for finance and administration at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, will assume the position of vice president for administration and finance and chief fiscal officer at Towson University in January.

The art galleries of Allegheny College will present the annual Faculty and Alumni Exhibit beginning today through Wednesday, November 2. A public reception will be held in the galleries today, Tuesday, Oct 11 from 7:30 to 9 pm. The art galleries will be closed Oct 15-18 for Fall Break. The exhibit will feature a variety of art works including drawings, sculpture, prints, photographs, video art, computer art and documentation of public art projects.

The Guelcher Film Series movie this week is Me and You and Everyone We Know. The film will be shown Wednesday, October 12, 2005, at 2 and 8 pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.

Sculptor Susan Read Cronin will be at the Erie Art Museum Thursday, October 13 to give a lecture titled, “What’s in a Name?” Cronin finds great inspiration creating titles for her sculptures. She will give a lively and entertaining retrospective of her work with slides and speak about how titles can impact one’s creative process. The lecture starts at 7 pm and will be held in the Erie Art Museum Annex. The event is free and open to the public. Cronin’s sculptures are also on display in the Museum’s Ground Floor Gallery through Oct 30.

The 2005 Northwest PA Rubber Duck Regatta will be held October 13 at Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park. Those who are just watching the race can get in free. If you’re never been there check the place out. If you want to go in the water, a discount for admission to the water park is available after 3 pm for a rate of $9.95 with a raffle ticket. The 18th annual Peek ‘n Peak Fall Fest will be held October 15 -16 and 22 - 23, 10 am to 5 pm daily. Admission and parking are free.

Dave Patronik (Orchard Park, NY) of Gannon University leads the individual field after the first day of the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men’s Golf Championships Monday afternoon at Lake View Country Club. Two rounds were played Monday and the final round is scheduled for Tuesday. Patronik leads the 50-player field with a two-round total of five-under-par 144. Saginaw Valley State leads the 10-team field with a two round total of 599.
