Erie PA News and Events for Wedesday October 12, 2005

On Friday evening, the Erie LifeStar helicopter crashed and the pilot was killed. One of the people with LifeStar that was interviewed said there were no maintenance problems with the aircraft. I guess not being able to fly isn’t a maintenance problem.
About three weeks ago, a girl named Kylie P had a rollover car accident. As she said in her blog - ‘They rescued me out of my car and I was flown to Hamot Hospital in Erie. I had two helicoptors take me because the first one didn’t want to fly right.’ OK, I know they ground flights all the time but someone might to want to look into this to see if there is any connection.
I missed the Kevin Flowers story in the Erie newspaper about the local club scene. A bartender and one of the owners with the Cellblock said they were baffled by the rumors that the bar was in touble or closing. The article was published on October 8. Well… on September 21 the business and the building was listed for sale. The asking price is $800,000. Maybe that contributed to the “rumor.”

Steve Gifford was recently hired as the executive director of the Greensburg Community Development Corp. Gifford has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Gannon University and a Masters from Pitt.
Maple Tree Properties, LLC, received a $338,000 PIDA loan to construct a new building in Lot 7 of the Joyce Savocchio Industrial Park in the City of Erie. The tenant, Paragon Print Systems, will use the 10,000-square-foot facility for the company’s bar code manufacturing operations. The company will create four new jobs and retain 12 jobs with this project.
The Guelcher Film Series movie this week is Me and You and Everyone We Know. The film will be shown today at 2 and 8 pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.
Sculptor Susan Read Cronin will be at the Erie Art Museum Thursday, October 13 to give a lecture titled, “What’s in a Name?” Cronin finds great inspiration creating titles for her sculptures. She will give a lively and entertaining retrospective of her work with slides and speak about how titles can impact one’s creative process. The lecture starts at 7 pm and will be held in the Erie Art Museum Annex. The event is free and open to the public. Cronin’s sculptures are also on display in the Museum’s Ground Floor Gallery through Oct 30.

Fredi Gonzalez, the bench coach for the Atlanta Braves, interviewed yesterday for the Florida Marlins’ managing job. Gonzalez spent 10 years in the Marlins organization including managing the Erie Sailors of the New York-Penn League in 1992.
Gannon’s Dave Patronik (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) became the first golfer in school history to win a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) golf championship while the Golden Knights finished third in the team standings after a feverish rally Tuesday afternoon at the 2005 GLIAC Men’s Golf Championships. Mercyhurst College hosted the three-round, two-day affair at Lake View Country Club. Patronik made school history by easily winning the individual title. The senior finished six-under-par with a three-round total of 210, finishing nine strokes ahead of four golfers that tied for second place. Saginaw Valley State led from start to finish, posting a three-round total of 898. Ferris State (303-297-303-903) placed second, edging Gannon (305-306-293-904) by one stroke. Grand Valley State (307-296-302-905) and Mercyhurst (302-306-302-910) completed the top five.

Anyone notice the assessed value that was placed on the build, $156,500. A far cry from its asking price of $800,000. (not even in the ball park). No wonder why the City is in such a crisis, maybe they should be taxing these people more money. What a joke!!!
