Work at Presque Isle Downs is moving ahead at a rapid pace. On Saturday a number of trucks delivered the steel supports for the underground storm and sanitary sewers were delivered. Expect traffice delays in the area as I sat in a traffic jam for 15 minutes while trucks were backed into the property.
MTR Gaming is building Presque Isle Downs, a horse race track and slots casino, to the South of I-90 exit 27 (Route 97).
Cledith “Clete” L Miller has been promoted to associate in the Cleveland office of Weber Murphy Fox Inc. Miller earned his bachelor’s degree at Penn State in 1999. Weber Murphy Fox is a full-service architectural, interiors and construction company with offices in Erie, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and State College.
The Rev Larry Richards will be a featured speaker at the Holy Toledo Catholic Charismatic Conference, to be held Friday through Oct 23. Father Richards is pastor of St Joseph Church and the Bread of Life Community in Erie, Pa. He is director of the Campus Ministry and spiritual director of To Encounter Christ.
Mercyhurst College has established an endowed book fund in memory of a 1938 alumna who worked for Yale University until age 85 and, upon her death, bequeathed to Mercyhurst $465,000. The gift from Frances C Malaney, ‘38, has not only funded a $100,000 endowed book fund for Mercyhurst’s Hammermill Library, it also funded a $266,000 endowed scholarship at Mercyhurst North East and added $90,000 to the Old Main Renovation Fund at the college.
The 18th annual Peek ‘n Peak Fall Fest will be held October 15 -16 and 22 - 23, 10 am to 5 pm daily. Admission and parking are free.
The Erie Chapter of the American Chemical Society will celebrate “The Joy of Toys” during National Chemistry Week, October 16 through the 22nd. At 7 pm on Monday, Oct 17, Penn State Behrend chemistry students will be at the Blasco Library to lead hands-on demonstrations recreating chemistry found in popular children’s books.On Saturday, Oct 22, chemistry students from Penn State Behrend, Allegheny College, Mercyhurst College, Gannon University, Edinboro University, and Pitt-Titusville will be at the Millcreek Mall from 10 am until 4 pm. They will help children participate in experiments celebrating this year’s toy theme. The ACS student affiliate chapters will wrap up National Chemistry Week on Saturday, Nov 12, by sponsoring a free admission day at the expERIEnce Children’s Museum, 420 French St. Hours will be from 11 am until 3 pm. The first 100 children will receive a free glow-in-the-dark flying disk and every child will be given a copy of the ACS publication “Celebrating Chemistry.”
Gannon University will host its annual Open House Sunday, Nov 6. Scholarship Contests for prospective students will be offered at 9 am in English, education, engineering, chemistry, biology, and foreign language. The contest in education, the Future Educators Award, is new to this year’s Open House.
Erie area college football scores:
Edinboro (5-2) defeated IUP 20-10.
Gannon (2-6) lost to Indianapolis 27-20.
Allegheny (0-6) was edged by Kenyon 34-27.
In the lone area football game on Saturday, Erie Cathedral Prep beat Erie Central 41-3.
Ryan O’Marra and Chris Greene each scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Erie Otters to a 7-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,476 at the Tullio Arena. Mike Blunden and Andrew Hotham supplied a goal and an assist for the Otters, who posted their second straight win. Nick Pamieri, Sean O’Connor and Christian Olsen also scored for Erie. For Olsen it was his first career OHL goal. Anthony Peluso and Jordan Nolan also collected their first OHL assist in the game. The Otters improved to 5-3 with the win. The Otters wrap up the weekend today on the road in Guelph in a 3 pm start. The game can be heard in it’s entirety on Sports Radio 1330 The FAN and on-line at ottershockey.com (presented by the James H Cross Company) immediately following Pittsburgh Steelers Football.
The Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team erupted for six goals in turning back Clarkson 6-0 Saturday to sweep the two-game series. The Lakers, ranked 8th in Division I, improved to 3-1.

The steel supports are for the Temporary Casino, which is due to start construction Mid November, completion June 2006. Keep an eyes out and let us now the constution progress as you drive by. Thanks Ohio can't wait!!!!
