Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday October 19, 2005

Erie County Executive candidate Dale McBrier held a press conference at the site of the future Presque Isle Downs saying that MTR Gaming shouldn’t be getting a taxpayer subsidy. Former used car salesman and point man for MTR, Greg Rubino, showed up and said the opening of the race track and slot’s casino could be delayed by a year without the subsidy. Yeah, right. They’d have the slot machines in a tent and operating today if they were allowed. Rubino is scum. The Summit Towship Industrial and Economic Development Authority will vote today on whether or not to give nearly $30 million to MTR to help with costruction costs.

The Millcreek Township School District was scammed in an illegal pyramid scheme. The district is among 13 in the state that have been taken by the National School Fitness Foundation. The Millcreek School District was to be paid off by later participants and school districts were required to pay the entire cost of the contracts up front. The fitness foundation pledged to reimburse the entire expense through voluntary contributions back to the district. In June 2004, the foundation filed for bankruptcy. The PA auditor general’s office will be conducting an audit to see how much Millcreek spent.

The MTSD used to be the biggest part of my beat when I was a reporter and I'm not the least bit surprised they were taken in by this. If memory serves, they were scammed by their food services director as well. Anyway, they're always looking for a way to make a quick buck ;)
