The Shauna Howe murder trial is expected to go the jury as early as today. James and Timothy O’Brien are accused of kidnapping, raping and murdering 11 year old Shauna Howe thirteen years ago this week. Shauna was walking home from a Halloween Girl Scout party in Oil City on the evening of October 27, 1992 when she was abducted. Oil City has held trick-or-treating during daylight hours for the past dozen years.

The Gannon University Nash Library Book Sale will be held from 10 am to 6 pm Tuesday and Wednesday, October 25-26. Hardcover books, paperbacks, pocket paperbacks, videos, and audio books will be offered in categories like history, engineering, business, psychology, science, education, and medicine.
Then Thursday thru Saturday is the book sale at the Erie County Library Blasco branch at 160 East Front Street. The hours are noon-8 Thursday, 9-5 Friday and 9-3 on Saturday.
Guelcher Film Series movie this week is Murderball. The film will be shown Wednesday, October 26, 2005 at 2 and 8 pm at the Mercyhurst Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Murderball is a film quadriplegic rugby players. Wheelchair rugy is highly competitive, rough sport. The movie made a star out of Mark Zupan.
The Achievement Center and the Sarah Reed Children’s Center are scaring up a good time at the Ninth Annual ‘Trail of Treats.’ This years event will be held two nights, October 26th and 27th, from 5 pm to 8:30 pm in the dungeons, err, concourses of the Millcreek Mall. Children attending will show off their costumes and receive treats from between 35-50 ‘treat stations’ or table sponsors throughout the Mall. This event enables children to celebrate Halloween in a safe, fun and climate-controlled environment. Proceeds from the event will benefit children with physical disabilities at the Achievement Center, and children with mental health issues served by Sarah Reed’s Children Center. Cost is only $2 per child in advance, and $3 at the door.

October 31 from 6:30 to 8 pm - Lawrence Park and Union City.
October 31 from 6 to 8 pm - Corry, Cranesville, Edinboro, Erie, Fairview, Girard, Girard, Harborcreek, Lake City, McKean, Millcreek, Mill Village, North East, North East, Wattsburg and Waterford.

It's fantastic that the communities in our area have after-dark trick-or-treat on Halloween. So many towns in the US move trick-or-treat to daylight hours or hold it on a Saturday or both. This is a lot more fun for kids, I think, and I'm glad this is how it is here.

I guess it is safer to have it during the day, but it does take the fun out of it like that. I liked trick-or-treating (not as much as most kids, though), but I couldn't stand the frickin' cold weather. I remember it snowing a year or two when I was out...ugh.
