The Salvation Army purchased the gas station/garage at 13th and Sassafras. They are demolishing the structure for a parking lot. Saint Vincent’s is buying houses along Sassafras between 24th and 25th and tearing them down for a parking lot. If the city complains that non-profits own over 40 percent Erie real estate, why do they keep allowing the non-profits to take properties off the tax rolls?

Until the city council and the mayor change the tax-exempt laws in Erie, the 60% (majority) of us will continue to fit 100% the bill for everyone. Only the truly non-profit organizations should be tax exempt. Last time I checked Mercyhurst, Gannon, St Vincents, and Hamot make a pretty hefty profit every single year and those are just the tip of the ice burgh. I’m sure there is lot more out there that should be on the tax rolls. If the city “really” wanted to fix the deficit they would change law.

Do keep in mind the fact that Mercyhurst, Gannon, St Vincents, and Hamot are several of the top employers in this community that provide good paying jobs to the people of Erie County. If St Vincents is building more parking for more employees to be hired, shouldn't we be happy for that considering how many jobs have been lost this year alone in the city? If Salvation Army is expanding, shouldn't we question why....as in lost jobs are causing more homeless people. Let's face it everyone, we need to bring jobs and training to our community instead losing the jobs that we have. I just don't think you should be knocking companies that are consistently hiring and whose employees provide to the economy of the community. That is like biting the hands that feed you. Anyway a few homes went, but the city will gain more in the long run with the employees that will occupy that space and the services that will be provided and improved upon to the community.

The amount of tax exempt status organizations in the City of Erie has nothing to do with the horrible financial situation that the mayors and city council members got us into. Hamot, Gannon and countless other non-profits bring income into the area. This blame-game is a desperate attempt to collect revenue. Leave the non-profits alone and instead, demand that our government solve the real problem of bringing in business and revitalizing down town.

WOW, you people just don’t get it. The tax-exempt status was originally created for those who were truly non-profit organizations. Over the years it has just become a joke. Why should myself and the other 60% of Erie people have to pay 100% of the taxes? I’m glad that they are some on the top employers In Erei, not like any of them are going anywhere any time soon. Why don’t we just turn Erie into one big giant parking lot and charge people a lot of money to park here, LOL. I do agree that the city gov. is just as much to blame, but enough is enough. It’s not like they don’t have the money to pay the taxes. Changing the tax- exempt status is not the only problem solver, but it sure is a good start. I challenge anyone to figure out just how much more in revenue the city would take in if they lowered the number of tax-exempt properties down to 10% to 15%. Quote “Anyway a few homes went, but the city will gain more in the long run with the employees that will occupy that space and the services that will be provided and improved upon to the community”. That’s the mentality that got us into this problem in the first place of too many tax exempt properties. One, two, or three here or there what the big deal until you start adding them all up. A good example is the Verizon building on Sass. I’d be willing to be that instead of a new business going in there Gannon will probably be interest in buying for their use and oooops there goes another property on the tax exempt status. It’s just like the old AAA building on West 6th Street, now tax exempt I’m sure because it’s owned by the United way. Besides, where are Hamot, ST Vincents, Gannon and Mercyhurst going to go. Move out of Erie and into Millcreek. Please...... It's your typical excuse of politicians afraid of losing votes if they changed the law. That's why we'll NEVER be a great city!
