Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday November 23, 2005
Mayor Rick Filippi will present his proposed 2006 budget to Erie City Council this morning at 9 am. Most of the budget work is the responsibility of council. The mayor proposes numbers, council decides on the budget. By state law, council must pass a balanced budget by December 31. The estimated city revenue for 2006 is about $55 million. If everything from 2005 was carried over to 2006, the city would need over $60 million so cuts must be made or taxes must be raised. Mayor-elect Joe Sinnott, who takes office January 3 and is currently a member of Erie City Council, has already said that the city must increase revenue. That means increases in fees and taxes. It should be an interesting meeting.
Black Friday can be tough on shoppers and the Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania has a calm solution that really makes a difference locally. Long after the toys are forgotten, the gift of life will remain. The Community Blood Bank will be open regulars hours on Black Friday from 9am to 6pm. The Community Blood Bank has been working this week for the children’s non-profit ecological and cultural program Butterflies for Kids. Butterflies for Kids will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. It’s theme will be “Planting for your Planet”, sharing the seeds of education, culture and friendship. The Butterflies for Kids mascot, Sherwin Squirrel will be on hand from 12-1pm for a fun photo-op to show just how easy donating blood is.
Michael Henein has joined the staff of St John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit. He also completed his fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at St Vincent Health Center in Erie PA.
The 21st annual Erie Boxing Classic takes place tonight at the Erie Avalon Hotel in downtown Erie. Your average garage sale is promoted better than this night at the fights. Erie native Mike Acri is the promoter. To tell you how poor it’s been, Erie native John Saraceno who covers boxing for USA Today, was at the Gannon-Edinboro basketball game and I’d bet he didn’t even know it was taking place.
A longstanding Erie Thanksgiving tradition adds another chapter this week as the Erie Otters open another busy weekend of Ontario Hockey League action when they face off against the Belleville Bulls Thursday at 7:30 pm at the Tullio Arena. The Box Office will be open Thanksgiving Day from 5 pm until tickets are gone. This game is usually a sell out.
The Columbus Blue Jackets sent Michael Rupp down to Syracuse. No wonder Columbus sucks. Rupp played for the Erie Otters from 1997-2000. Mike never did move away, he and his wife Christi still reside in Erie. In the 2002-03 season, Rupp scored the goal that gave the New Jersey Devils a Game 7 win over Anaheim in the Stanley Cup Finals.
David Sundberg of Erie was named to the Atlantic 10 Football All-Conference second team. Sundberg was an offensive lineman for New Hampshire.
Former Erie SeaWolves RHP Matt Roney signed a free agent contract with the Oakland A’s. Roney pitched in the Detroit and Texas organizations in 2005 and was a combined 5-3 with five saves and a 1.85 ERA in 49 appearances, all in relief, with Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo and Oklahoma. Oakland manager Ken Macha lives in Pittsburgh and his daughter Kristin attends Penn State Behrend.
