Erie PA News and Events for Saturday November 26, 2005
Christmas shopping season opened yesterday. With nearly every imaginable retail chain store, upper Peach Street is a shopping mecca. The area was busy from 4:30 am onward. With no sales tax on clothing, people from hundreds of miles around come to shop. Buses and cars with license plates from Ontario, New York and Ohio at times seem to outnumber those from Pennsylvania.
The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority, the local bus company, has a food drive starting on Monday. The “Stuff the Bus” food drive begins on Monday, November 28. Passengers can bring donations of non-perishable food items to the buses or donations can also be left at the EMTA office, 127 East 14th Street or the LIFT office at 824 West 18th Street.

There are two high school football playoff games today. Class AAA District 10 champion General McLane faces Pittsburgh Perry at 12 pm Saturday at Slippery Rock University. Than at 6 pm at the Rock, Erie Cathedral Prep will play McKeesport Saturday, November 26th, in PIAA Class AAAA football.
Eric Giesow hit a three-pointer from the left wing as time expired giving Northwood a 68-65 victory over the Gannon University men’s basketball team. Gannon dropped to 1-4 with its fourth consecutive loss.
Freshman Valerie Chouinard scored with one second remaining in the game to give the No. 7 Mercyhurst Lakers women’s hockey team a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Princeton.
Ferris State scored three times in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and defeat the Mercyhurst men’s hockey team 6-3 Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The two teams play again Saturday night at 7 pm.
The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League get back at it tonight at the Tullio Arena when they welcome the Kitchener Rangers for a 7:30 pm start. The Otters, who dropped a 2-1 decision to the Belleville Bulls Thursday night at the Tullio Arena, are in the midst of a season-long six-game losing streak and four-game home losing streak. The game can also be seen live on the Image Sports Network, Adelphia Channel 12 in Erie County and Time Warner Channel 20 in the City of Erie.
Edinboro sophomore Brooke Heath, who had four first-place finishes in meets against Kutztown and Mansfield, is CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate NCAA Division II Women’s swimmer of the week. She was Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rookie of the year last season.
Edinboro sophomore tackle Chris Amico was named the PSAC West defensive player of the year.
The Columbus Blue Jackets signed center Geoff Platt to a multi-year contract. Platt was signed to a standard entry level contract and will remain on assignment to the Syracuse Crunch, the Columbus American Hockey League affiliate. In 2004-05, he notched 45-34-79 and 84 penalty minutes in 68 games with the Erie Otters.

A lot of stores are also doing monetary donations for Toys For Tots. I believe Toys R Us and Wegmans are among them. They only ask for a buck.
