Erie PA News and Events for Thursday November 3, 2005

Erie Indemnity Company today announced results for the third quarter 2005. Erie Indemnity Company provides management services to the member companies of the Erie Insurance Group. Management fee revenue decreased by 1.9 percent to $241.6 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2005. The lower management fee rate in the third quarter of 2005 of 23.75 percent, compared to 24 percent in the third quarter of 2004, resulted in $2.6 million less in management fee revenue. They still made a ton of money. Net income for the quarter was $53,005,000. I had to laugh when I read in their report that they had “increased personnel costs, including contract labor for information technology projects.”

Brad Fairfield announced that the Joseph McCormick Company of Erie was awarded the contract to demolish the buildings at Koehler Brewery Square, the old Koehler Brewery that closed in the last 1970’s. Demolition will take place over the Winter and then construction will begin in the Spring. The first new building will up and occupied by Spring of 2007.

Lake Erie flows West to East. Usually sand from Ohio ends up at Presque Isle State Park. For the part decade or so millions have been spent replenishing the sand because not enough is ending up at Presque Isle. Why? A breakwall at Conneaut, Ohio is stopping the natural flow. Ohio spends millions having the Conneaut channels and Township Park Beach dredged. Pennsylvania then spends millions buying the sand and shipping it 25 miles to Erie. A classic engineering blunder. The US Army Corps of Engineers has begun a study to find a permanent solution to the sand situation.

Nooooooooooo! I’ve you ever driven on the Misery Bay Bridge on Presque Isle State Park you know the great sound your tires make. It’s the one with the holes in the steel to allow for drainage. It’s being replaced and the Marina Pond Bridge is being rehabed. The state announced a $1.8 million grant for the projects yesterday.

Members of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority at Behrend had a memorable initiation night. Police found a stolen road sign, underagers drinking and open containers.

The Millcreek Township School District received a $400,000 state grant to install approximately 15,000 square feet of porous pavement, a rainwater harvesting system to collect storm water for use in non-potable water applications (toilets), a 1/4 acre wetland and a 2,000 sq ft green roof as part of the JS Wilson Middle School green building project.

Dave Sinclair of Erie has a growing mail order business. He operates Sinclair’s Mini-Auto, aka Sinclair’s Auto Miniatures, which is selling a large amount of 1/43 size scale model cars.

Harold Richard “Dick” Weingard was one of 31 individuals, groups and corporations honored with the 2005 Delaware Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Award. He spent time volunteering at the Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village. Weingard grew up on a Pennsylvania grape farm near North East, PA.

Nearly 120 recruiters will be at Mercyhurst College today, Thursday, November 3, for a job fair open to students from Erie area colleges. It will run from 1 to 4 pm at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Admission is free.

The Ben Folds concert at Allegheny College takes place tonight. The show time is 8 pm. The doors will open at 7 pm. The last word I had was that some tickets are still available. You can purchase tickets at the Campus Center box office starting at 5 pm.

The Asbury Woods Nature Center will hold a dedication and ribbon cutting on November 5 at 11 am. The center will host an Open House all day Saturday and Sunday with live music, tours, hikes, crafts and more. If you’ve never seen this amazing place, go this weekend.

The Ontario Hockey League Academic Player of the Month for October in the Mid-West Division is Vince Scott of the Erie Otters. Scott, 19, a Mississauga, Ontario native, is in his second year at Gannon University.

The Mercyhurst College wrestling team was ranked 15th and Gannon 16th in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches’ Association Top 20 preseason poll released Wednesday afternoon.

That's why the green and yellow ones at Behrend(AST) are better. We know how to have fun while behaving. :-D Sadly, we'll still get a bad name from the stupid crap everyone else pulls.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of that going on in sororities and fraternities. Ones that don't get out of hand in one way or another are few and far between.

I'm glad it wasn't an AST chapter that happened. It would be un-panhellenic of me to laugh at that. I'm interested in hearing the details of it though. Do you know more about that?

I too would be disappointed if the Misery Bay bridge is not replaced with a similar "waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" cool sounding bridge decking.
Where else can you spit on bass fishermen while cruising at 25 MPH???
