Dr John Lilley
Dr John Lilley will be named as President of Baylor University later today. Lilley is currently the President of the University of Nevada at Reno. Prior to that post, he led the Penn State Erie, the Behrend College. Lilley is a graduate of Baylor with bachelor’s degrees in 1961, 1962, and a master’s in ‘64.

Erie Police are looking for 19 year old Matthew Perez for the murder of Paul Martinson. Perez shot and killed Martinson in the parking lot of the Antigua Blue drug store and bar on West 26th Street. Maybe is police would have released the name of the suspect earlier, Perez would already be in custody. It was nearly 16 hours before the name was released. And why was a 19 year old at the bar?

I love Smith’s Hot Dogs (no web site) but they are twice as expensive as most other brands. The School District of the City of Erie will now be serving Smith’s in school cafeterias. The change in brands could cost the equivalent of one teaching position as the district serves 40,000 hot dogs every month. I think our school directors flunked math.

A Walgreens drug store will be built at 38th and Peach. The real estate deleloper for the company has options to buy the used car lot and Dunn Tire store properties.

JC Data Solutions (OTC: JCDS), a Manufacturer and Distributor of document management systems, announced they will market their archival and retrieval software to the Texas legal market. JC Data Solutions has their technical support office based in Erie.

The Gannon University Program for Students with Learning Disabilities and the Honor’s Program, along with students from the Schuster Theatre and Environmental Club, recently re-created the world of Harry Potter on campus. Thanks to a $3,500 grant from the Erie Community Foundation, Gannon was able to teach children the value of children’s literature through experiential and hands-on learning. Gannon professors spent the day teaching children “Harry Potter lessons” in astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology and theatre.

Mercyhurst College and the Erie School District have been awarded a $499,734 Teaching American History Grant from the United States Department of Education to provide professional development for teachers and heighten awareness of the United States Constitution with a goal of enhancing student understanding of American history. The program is expected to involve approximately 25 middle and high school teachers of American history and impact roughly 13,000 students in the City of Erie.

Join musicians, dancers, chefs and more for A Passage to India, Penn State Behrend’s November celebration of Indian culture, music, dance, and food. Beginning at 5 pm Friday, Nov 4, Indian food will be available for purchase in the Wintergarden of the Reed Student Union Building. Entertainment begins at 6:20 pm with authentic Indian dance performed by Penn State Behrend students Deepti Soni, a political science major, and plastics engineering technology major Nehal Kachalia. The featured performers, internationally known musicians Kiran Ahluwalia and Shafaatullah Khan, will begin to play at 7 pm. Tickets for this combined performance are priced at $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $40 for a family.

The Allegheny College Playshop Theatre continues its 2005-2006 season with Tina Howe’s moving comedy “Approaching Zanzibar,” under the direction of Dan Crozier. An out-of-kilter comedy that centers on life, death, love and family, “Approaching Zanzibar” will be performed at 8 pm on Friday and Saturday, Nov 4-5, and at 2:30 pm on Sunday, Nov 6, in Allegheny’s Playshop Theatre, located in Arter Hall.

The Fantastics premieres this weekend at the Erie Playhouse. The musical will be performed November 4-5, 10-13 and 16-20. The box office phone number is 814-454-2852.

The Asbury Woods Nature Center will hold a dedication and ribbon cutting on November 5 at 11 am. The center will host an Open House all day Saturday and Sunday with live music, tours, hikes, crafts and more.

Gannon University will host its annual Open House Sunday, November 6.

The Erie Otters look to keep a good thing going this weekend when they take on the Kitchener Rangers in a home-and-home series beginning Friday night in Kitchener. Saturday the two teams meet at the Tullio Arena in a 7:30 pm start. The Otters (9-6) head into the pair of games against their Midwest Division rivals riding a four-game winning streak.

Bob Learn Jr of Erie cashed for $1000 but did not advance at the Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Qualifying Round in the 2005 Mile High Classic at Brunswick Zone Lakewood, CO.

The Mercyhurst Lakers women’s hockey team host the Niagara Purple Eagles Friday night at 7:35 and Saturday afternoon at 3:05.

The Mercyhurst/Gannon men’s soccer rivalry will once again have added incentives when the two programs meet Saturday, November 5, at Gannon University Field. The regular season finale for both teams is scheduled for 1 pm.

What's sad is that shooting happened two blocks away from me, and the first I heard about it was last night from my boss.

The Erie School District might be getting a price break from Smith's for only serving their hot dogs. I know from my days at Strong Vincent, the hot dogs they served were the nastiest ever (I think they were that Corn King crap or something).

Oh yeah, I haven't updated my site in awhile because my webhost hasn't fixed it for 7 days so far. I'm in the process of moving to a new host.

Maybe Barker is going to give back ten percent of his salary for the hot dogs?

Re Erie School District Hot Dogs:
The pricing structure for foodservice is very different than retail so the comparison is misleading. More than likely, the school district solicited bids and Smith's offered the best price and quality.

I got from the article in the Erie Times News that the hot dogs would only be served twice a month and would only incur a 10% increase in cost.
