Erie PA News and Events for Saturday November 12, 2005
After dragging their feet to protect a fellow city worker, Erie Police finally charged a female clerk in the Traffic Court office of stealing money. In a total bullshit move, her name and the amount of money she embezzled was not released. I heard it was over $100,000. The moral of the story is, if you are a crook and want preferental treatment from the police and the District Attorney’s office, get a government job.
A couple of years ago the owner of the Burger King on the NE corner of 12 and French tried purchase the property across the street on the SE corner. The Erie Zoning Board wouldn’t change the zoning to allow for a drive-thru. Now Erie City Councilman Ian Murray and the Baldwin Brothers want the zoning changed that would allow for a Wendy’s to be built on the site. The hearing with be held the first week of December. Writing out a check to a politician for a campagin contribution sure seemed to help change minds.
If you heard a cheer from the wineries in North East and wine drinkers yesterday, it was because a judge overturned the Pennsylvania ban on Internet and mail order shipments. Having the wineries only sell directly through state run liquor stores would have added an 18 percent liquor tax, a 6 percent sales tax and $4.50 handling fee for each order.

The Gannon University Golden Harvest Food Drive takes place today. The annual drive will target neighborhoods in the City of Erie and Millcreek Township from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Participants will go door-to-door with the goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of non-perishable food items and canned goods. Those wishing to contribute to the drive also can take items to one of the designated drop zones: Blessed Sacrament parish, 1626 West 26th Street; St James parish, 2635 Buffalo Road; and Villa Maria Academy, 2403 West Eighth Street. All items collected will be donated to Erie’s Second Harvest Food Bank, 1702 Ash Street.
Mercyhurst Preparatory School, 538 East Grandview Blvd, presents the musical comedy “Little Mary Sunshine.” Performances at 7 pm tonight and again Nov 17-19. Performances at 3 pm Nov 13, 19, 20. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students $4. For more information, call 814-824-2063.
Henry Segall’s play, Heaven Can Wait, opens tonight at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The production will be held in Penn State Behrend’s Studio Theatre and will be performed tonight and November 16-20 at 8:00 pm and Sundays, November 13 and 20, at 2:00 pm. General admission is $5.

The London Knights used an offensive explosion to build an early lead scoring three times in 46 seconds in the first period then scored four power-play goals in the opening nine minutes of the second period and cruised to a 7-1 win over the Erie Otters. The Otters play tonight at the Tullio Arena when they host the Sudbury Wolves. The game can also be seen live on the Image Sports Network (Adelphia Channel 12, Time Warner Channel 20).
WPIAL champion Plum (21-1-1) will take on District 10 winner Erie Cathedral Prep (21-2) in the PIAA Class AAA boys soccer quarterfinals at 3 pm today at Karns City.
The Gannon men’s basketball team got the rears kicked by the University of Buffalo 90-59. The Knights are lacking a true center and it showed last night.
