Republican Dale McBrier has conceded the Erie County Executive race. He will not ask for a recount nor persue any court challenges. Pretty smart move since the writing was on the wall already. Democrat Mark DiVecchio has leading in the official count by 122 votes. McBrier had the lead at the end of election night with six more votes than DiVecchio. McBrier lashed out at the Republican part for not supporting him more. Although McBrier did better than expected in the City of Erie, the votes he was counting on in other parts of the county never materialized. The City of Erie mayor gets the big coverage from the TV stations and newspaper but the Erie County budget is 4 times larger and is a much more important position in every respect.

If you guessed that the first snow would fall on November 17th, you win. It’s snowing and cold. A couple of inches or snow is expected and temperatures will fall into the mid 20’s tonight. The snow might not stick because the ground is still warm but snow is snow. It sucks. The Lake Erie water temperature is 52 degrees and until the lake starts freezing over, huge amounts of snow could dump on the area.

A new low-cost airline is coming to Erie International Airport. It’s called Airlink Express and will only fly within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Services would begin next April with 4-round-trip flights a day between, Harrisburg, State College and Erie. More flights will be added down the road. Airlink Express is designed so travelers can fly directly to smaller airports without the high price and without going through a hub like Philadelphia or Pittsburgh.

Erie based Spectrum Control (Nasdaq: SPEC) is rumored to be purchasing the former Murata-Erie plant in State College, PA to replace their New Orleans facility. The 250,000 sq ft plant where Murata made ceramic chip capacitors has been closed since the company laid-off 300 employees in March 2004. Spectrum Control has been leasing part of the plant to repair equipment that was damaged at its New Orleans facility by Hurricane Katrina. Spectrum Control, like Murata, makes ceramic chip capacitors so the plant would be perfect for them. Spectrum President and CEO Dick Southworth is a former employee of Murata.

Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Mary Boone had changed the way people in her field represented artists. Boone is ‘the’ star art dealer. Mary Boone Gallery was founded in New York in 1977. The first Gallery was a small ground floor space at the renowned Soho address 420 West Broadway. From the outset, the Gallery was committed to showing the work of innovative young artists. In May 1996 the Gallery moved uptown to Fifth Avenue and 57 Street, long established crossroads of the art world. In November 2000, Mary Boone Gallery opened an additional space in Manhattan’s developing Chelsea art district.

Brashear plays host to Erie Cathedral Prep in a PIAA Class AAAA football first round game 7 pm Friday at Cupples Stadium. Again Erie gets screwed. A Saturday game would have allowed for more people from Erie to travel to the game.

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League get back into action this weekend with three games in three days starting with road encounters Thursday in Peterborough and Friday in Oshawa.
