Mayor Rick Filippi had profesional movers clean out his office about 6 weeks before Joe Sinnott takes over in January. He is still showing up to get his paycheck.
Until I started blogging, I never realized how many authors the Ere area has produced. I saw that Sean Thomas Dougherty recently did a reading from his book Nightshift Belonging to Lorca. Dougherty is the author of six books including Except By Falling, winner of the 2000 Pinyon Press Poetry Prize from Mesa State College. The recipient of a 2004 PA Council for the Arts Poetry Fellowship, he is the Assistant Director for the BFA Program in Creative Writing at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
Valeo Capital Partners received $5 million from the Pennsylvania Venture Capital Investment Fund to invest in emerging-growth technology and growth-capital companies in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh metropolitan areas. Under the program, the venture firms are required to invest in Pennsylvania companies a minimum of $3 for every $1 invested by the state. At the time the venture firm makes money on its investment, the state will get a percentage in return.
The Millcreek Township School District received a $250,000 grant from the state to purchase and install a 30-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system that will generate 34,600 kilowatt hours a year. Photovoltaic devices, solar cells, use semiconducting materials to convert sunlight directly into electricity.
Thomas R Quinn Jr was named the new president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank (South Florida). Quinn, a native of Plattsburgh, NY, graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Martha Anderson was elected to the Heartland Senior Services of Story County, Iowa Foundation Board for 2005-2008. Before she retired Anderson was Headstart Director for GECAC in Erie.
Motley Crue will be playing a concert in Erie on February 17 at 8 pm at the Tullio Arena. Tickets go on sale Saturday morning at 10 am.
The Great Lakes Aid Foundation, a local organization devoted to protecting and restoring the Great Lakes ecosystem, kicks off its fund-raising concert series with Roger McGuinn of The Byrds on Saturday at 7:30 pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25 at the PAC box office, or call 814-824-3000 to reserve.
National Child Day is Saturday November 20 and the Achievement Center is holding an event called “Celebration of Children” that day from 5-7 pm at the center located at 101 East Sixth Street.
The first 50 donors to donate blood on Saturday get a free turkey! The “Season of Giving” is back at the Community Blood Bank and is even bigger and better than last year’s. This Saturday the blood bank will be open longer to encourage people to donate before the holidays. Giant Eagle has generously donated 50 turkeys for the first 50 donors on Saturday just in time for Thanksgiving. All donors are strongly encouraged to donate at the Erie Community Blood Bank, 2646 Peach Street. Community Blood Bank is open from 9-6 Monday through Friday and until 7:30pm Tuesday night and Saturday 9am-12:30 pm. Photo ID required.
Erie Cathedral Prep (9-3) crushed Pittsburgh Brashear 59-0 in the PIAA Class AAAA high school football playoffs. Brashear was the Pittsburgh city league champ. The Pittsburgh city league champ is 0-16 since this stupid playoff format was started where they play the District 10 champ. The ‘mercy rule’, where the clock never stops, was in effect for nearly 3/4ths of the game. Cathedral Prep led 35-0 less than one minute into the second quarter. The Ramblers will play the WPIAL champion, Woodland Hills or McKeesport, next week in the PIAA quarterfinals.
General McLane (11-0) edged Erie Strong Vincent 23-20 for the District 10 Class AAA football championship. McLane with a good, big offensive line, ran the ball over 60 times. The Lancer will play Pittsburgh Perry in the PIAA AAA quarterfinal game next week.
In the District 10 Class A football cahmpionship game, Kennedy Catholic defeated Sharpsville 34-12.
The Oshawa Generals beat the Erie Otters 5-3. Mike Blunden scored twice for the Otters. Vince Scott had the other. The Otters return home tonight to the Tullio Arena when the London Knights make their first visit of the season. The Erie General Electric Federal Credit Union presents the 7:30 pm start with the first 400 fans into the game receiving a free copy of the latest edition of the Otters Game Night Program.
Valdosta State hit a 3 pointer with 1 second on the clock to beat the Gannon men’s basketball team 74-72.
The Mercyhurst men’s basketball team edged Felician 83-79.

The Sacred Heart men’s hockey team scored three goals in the second period and went on to defeat Mercyhurst College 4-2.
Mashea Williams (Erie Mercyhurst Prep) started for the Penn State Lady Lions basketball team in their 93-67 loss to top ranked Duke. Williams had 7 points.
