Erie PA News and Events for Sunday November 20, 2005

Ed Hinkel and Jovan Johnson, both of Erie PA, went out in style in their last home game for the Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium. Ed Hinkel caught seven passes for 151 yards and a stadium record four touchdowns. The Hawkeye crowd chanted ‘ED-DIE!’ after his final touchdown in the fourth quarter and gave him a standing ovation when he left the field for the last time. Jovon Johnson intercepted a pass to move to within one of Nile Kinnick and Devon Mitchell’s school record of 18 for a career. Johnson is the NCAA active career interception leader. Ed Hinkel graduated from Erie Cathedral Prep and Jovan Johnson from Erie Mercyhurst Prep. Hinkel and Johnson have one more game to play. Iowa will either be playing in the Alamo Bowl, the Outback Bowl or the Sun Bowl. The bowl selections will be released December 4.

Erie PA native Mark Dwyer is the Chief of Appeals at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. Dwyer graduated from Princeton and went to law school at Yale. He attended classes at both schools with Sam Alito, the nominee to the US Supreme Court. Alito and Dwyer were roommates at Yale for three years. Dwyer said he has no lampshade on the head stories about Alito, as Alito rarely went out. Alito had the nickname of ‘Felix’, as in Felix of the Odd Couple, at law school because he was so neat and organized.

Howard Lyon of Erie, Pa began tracking science textbooks in 1994. Lyon studied science in college so his daughter thought she could get the answer to a science question from him. He found that the question didn’t even make sense. He went directly to the source. He contacted the authors. Most of them had never even heard of the textbooks in question, said they hadn’t written them and didn’t even know they were listed as authors. Her textbook was ‘Exploring Physical Science’, published by Prentice Hall. Here are a few sample errors that the Middle School Physical Science Resource Center found in ‘Exploring Physical Science.’
‘the sound portions of most television broadcasts are carried as AM waves while the picture portions are carried as FM waves.’ Both the audio signals and the video signals are broadcast as FM waves.
‘stopping distance of a car is directly related to its momentum.’ The stopping distance is directly related to the car’s kinetic energy, not to momentum.
‘software must be precise because in most cases a computer cannot think on its own.’ In no case can a computer today think on its own.
