Erie PA News and Events for Monday November 21, 2005
Erie City Council will work on the 2006 City of Erie budget this week. There are reports that the mayor’s proposed budget call for over 60 more layoffs. Interesting how it calls cuts to the Streets Department, Parks Department, Bureau of Police and the Fire Department but few at city hall.
A week ago, Mike Machuga of Erie won the 2005 Greater Omaha Classic. After Machuga clinched the title match with two strikes in the 10th frame, he surprised everyone by doing his famous “Machuga Flop” (video), hanging onto the ball and flinging himself down the lane. Ron Richardson found the video and has included it on his site. There have been tons of people looking for the clip. You got to see it. You’ll laugh your rear off.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has refused to release MTR Gaming from costs associated with cleaning-up the former Hammermill/IP plant site. Ha! The Greater Erie Industrial Development Corporation purchased most of the site from MTR, but if GEIDC doesn’t do the work, MTR will be stuck doing it. MTR purchased the former paper mill plant from IP for a possible site for Presque Isle Downs. MTR decided to build at another site in Summit Township becasue they didn’t get the subsidy. MTR has tried to get (nearly exhort) up to $37 million for site improvements for the track to locate it at the Hammermill site. It would be poetic justice if they had to pony up money for clean up costs
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, School of Pharmacy has a Drug Information Newsletter with information on new and currently available prescription drugs. It’s dry reading for the average person (me), but news organizations pour over it. It’s also caused the networks and reports to put the LECOM School of Pharmacy on speed dial when they need answers or a good quote. Procter and Gamble has a product called Vicks First Defense which is intended to fight the common cold at the earliest stages of infection. MSNBC did a story on the product. Dr Larry Sasich of the LECOM School of Pharmacy said to save your money.
The Right Rev Robert Deane Rowley, Jr, bishop of the Erie PA based Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania, served as chief celebrant at Pennsylvania State Day Sunday at Washington National Cathedral.
Paul Spaeth will give a presentation entitled “The World through the Wardrobe: C S Lewis and the Chronicles of Narnia,” at 7:30 pm on Monday, Nov 21. Spaeth will discuss Lewis and the literary and religious underpinnings of his classic fantasy series, in advance of the December opening of the film version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in room 219 of the Waldron Center, 124 West Seventh Street. For more information, contact the Gannon University English department at 814-871-7725, or call 814-871-5497.
Judith Rose, assistant professor of English and women’s studies at Allegheny College, will speak on “Quaker Prophetesses and Medieval Mystics: Unexpected Convergences” at 7:30 pm on Monday, Nov 21 in Room 301 of the Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.
In case you didn’t see it, the Steelers lost in overtime to Baltimore 16-13. WSEE-TV was forced to switch over to the Bills game at 4:15 pm becasue this is the Bills market even though there are very few Bills fans in this area. Crap like this sells satellite dishes with football packages and the NFL gets a nice chunk of that money.
Erie Cathedral Prep will play McKeesport Saturday, November 26th, in the PIAA Class AAAA football western finals at 6 pm at Slippery Rock University. Tickets go on sale today at Prep. Adults are $6 and students are $3.
Mercyhurst women’s lacrosse head coach Cecil Pilson has announced the signing of five high school seniors to National Letters of Intent to begin competition with the Lakers in the 2006-07 academic year. Joining the Lakers will be Megan Dwyer, (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), Stephanie Guiffrida (Syracuse, NY/Henninger), Katie “Maeve” McGoff (Terrace Park, OH/Mariemont), Kathryn Nagle (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy), and Katherine “Kate” Smith (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron).

I had to hear about that cutaway all afternoon and evening. Hawk was still griping about it at bedtime. I think it's just indicitive of WSEE's coverage in general.
BTW: Hawk's dad said that the Altoona station also cut away but they cut away after the game itself was over (before the overtime). So so much for WSEE's excuse about their obligation.
