Camden, NJ has been named the most dangerous city in the US for the second consecutive year, according to an annual survey based on crime statistics. Morgan Quitno Press compared 369 cities in six major crime categories - murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and vehicle theft. Erie PA ranked 243rd nationally. Here are the other Pennsylvania cities: Reading was 29th , Philadelphia ranked 33rd, Pittsburgh was 69th and Allentown was 121st. It was the second year in a row that Erie was the safest city in PA.
The Erie Observer is one of the newspapers included in the Pennsylvania Civil War Newspapers site. Holy cow is this site cool. The Web site uses “article level scanning,” in which a newspaper page is broken into its component articles during the scanning and indexing process. The Web site allows the newspapers to be looked at by date, in which case the whole newspaper page is displayed at first, with the option to click on any article and have it pop up for closer inspection. The site also is searchable by any word, and the search can be limited to any one of the newspapers or all of them, as well as by date of publication.

The Gannon University men’s basketball team return to action tonight against Edinboro at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 8 pm. There is no women’s game. The Edinboro University Alumni Association is holding a pre-game party for fans at Park Place. The two of you are supposed to meet there at 6:30 pm. There won’t be police stationed outside the bar who will tell you to “Go back to your own city.” That only happens in Edinboro where outsiders are not welcome. Security and ushers at the Hammermill Center won’t tell you to sit down and shut-up. Again, that only happens in Edinboro where fans of opposing teams are not welcome.
University of Iowa senior wide receiver Ed Hinkel has been named co-Offensive Player of the Week in the Big Ten. He becomes the fourth Hawkeye to earn the award this season. Hinkel, a native of Erie, PA, played his final game in Kinnick Stadium last Saturday against Minnesota and set a stadium record with four touchdown receptions. The four TD catches also lets him share the school mark previously set by Quinn Early (1987 vs. NW). Hinkel also established personal career highs with seven catches for 151 yards against the Gophers. Hinkel, who broke his arm against Purdue earlier this season, returned to action against Wisconsin last week. The weekly Big Ten award is the second for Hinkel. He was named league Special Teams Player of the Week as a freshman against Northwestern in 2002.
Goalie Shaun Williams has committed to play hockey at Division I Union College. Williams graduated from Erie Cathedral Prep. He is playing this year in the United States Hockey League for the Chicago Steel.

I'm surpised to hear that Erie is the safest city in Pa, but pleasantly surprised of course.
Does that number reflect all the burgleries we had last fall/winter?
