MTR Gaming Group received a takeover offer from two of the company’s executives, in a deal that valued at about $258.4 million. The company’s shares soared $1.84 or 23 percent to close at $9.73 on Friday. MTR Chief Executive Ted Arneault and Executive Vice President Robert Blatt propose paying $9.50 per share in cash for at least 90 percent of MTR’s 27.2 million outstanding shares. They going to have to up their bid if they really want it. MTR Gaming is beginning work on Presque Isle Downs, an $80 million racetrack casino in Erie, Pa, where it will offer slot machines possibly next fall and begin live racing in the fall of 2007 or Spring of 2008.

A fire broke out at 234 W Fourth St late Thursday night/ Friday morning. A pre-teen boy is in critical condition after he jumped from a second floor window after he went back into the house to try and get his pet. I believe the rental property is owned a City of Erie firefighter. Smoke detectors were not in the proper places and did not work. I guess fire codes and information on smoke detectors aren’t available to firefighters.

Police found out who jammed the Coinstar machine at Tops Market. A couple said their son took them from their family home. Ouch.

The Pittsburgh Steelers game with Cincinnati on Sunday at will not be shown in the Erie area. It’s either a dish or a bar with the NFL package for Steeler fans. And Merry Christmas to all. The Steelers-Browns game on Christmas Eve is also blackout in the Erie area.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will host a public meeting on Wednesday, Dec 7, to present a draft of the final master plan for Erie Bluffs State Park, Pennsylvania’s newest state park in Erie County, PA. The meeting will begin at 7 pm at Girard High School, 1135 Lake St, Girard. “Our plan is to create a nature-based park that will allow visitors to experience, understand and appreciate the property’s steep bluffs, rocky-cobble shore, undeveloped creek corridors and plateau,” DCNR Secretary Michael DiBerardinis said. The master plan includes a proposal to develop a trail network with lake-view observation points for visitors, as well as overnight accommodations that incorporate a small nature inn and group camping, with remote primitive camping provided for backpackers and paddlers. The 72-page plan is available for review on DCNR’s web site.

IFP North America announced Friday that they have entered into a five year fruit supply contract with C H Robinson Worldwide ( CHRW ) headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. IFP will be producing not-from-concentrate and from-concentrate juice products in a wide range of flavors and a variety of container size options, using fruit procured and supplied by CHRW from process fruit sources in the United States and from around the world. “We are very pleased to be working with such a major force in the fruit-supply chain side of the business,” said Herb W Fiss, Chairman and CEO of IFP. “C H Robinson is one of North America’s largest third-party logistics companies and they are a major piece of our puzzle. This guarantees that we will have the high quality fruit we need to produce IFP’s high quality juice lines at IFP’s $65 million single-site, vertically integrated aseptic multi-fruit and juice packaging plant in Erie, Pennsylvania.” The “$65 million single-site, vertically integrated aseptic multi-fruit and juice packaging plant” has yet to be built.

Peek'n Peak
Peek n Peak will open for skiing today, Saturday December 3. Slopes will open at 8:30 am. The Peak first opened in the winter of 1964.

This season the Roadhouse Theatre offers the entire family great big belly laughs for Christmas. Mrs Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge is a playful, cracked look at the perennial Dickens Christmas classic about Scrooge discovering the true meaning of Christmas through the visitation of three ghosts. In Durang’s giddy version, the ghost’s magic is off, and Scrooge and the ghost keep showing up at Bob Cratchit’s house way too early, where Mrs Bob Cratchit – a long suffering saint in the Dickens – is in a state of fury, hating her life and planning on getting drunk and jumping off the London Bridge. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm through December 17 at the Roadhouse Theatre, 145 West 11th St, Erie, PA 16501. Admission; $5 student $8 regular, $10 riser, VIP $12.

The Saint Vincent Health Center Auxiliary Festival of Trees is taking place now through December 4 at the Avalon Hotel. The cost is $5 for adults, $2.50 for kids and children 3 and under are free.

The Gem City Jazz Ensemble will provide musical entertainment for the Festival of Trees at the Avalon Hotel’s Niagara Room, 16 West 10th Street, Erie, PA, on Saturday, December 3rd from 2 pm to 2:45 pm. Come enjoy the sights of Christmas and the sounds of jazz. The 20-member Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Tim McKinney, will feature jazz favorites as well as Christmas songs with a jazz twist. The Festival of Trees is open to the public. $5 Adults, $2.50 Children. Admission at the door includes tree viewing, entertainment, and children’s activities. Children 3 and under are free.

Franklin Regional defeated General McLane 27-21 in the PIAA Class AAA Western Finals. The snow and ice hampered the speed advantage of McLane.

The Barrie Colts beat the Erie Otters 4-1. Erie lost for the ninth consecutive time to establish a new franchise record for consecutive losses. Patrick Lee scored the lone Otters goal. The majority of people I’ve talked to blame the management and not the players for the troubles with the team. They play at home again tonight at 7:30. The game can be heard live on SportsRadio 1330 The FAN beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm. It also can be seen live on the Image Sports Network (Adelphia Channel 12 in Erie County and Time Warner Channel 20 in the City of Erie). Hamot Hockey Night begins at 7:30 pm.

The Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team scored five power play goals to come from behind for a 7-4 win over Bentley College Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the win Mercyhurst improved to 8-6-0 and 7-2-0 in conference. The two teams meet again Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center at 7 pm.

On Friday, Miami freshman Tenley Marsteller (Erie, Pa/ Erie McDowell) clocked in at 59.17 in the 100 back prelims at the Miami Invitational.

Freshman Justin Mercier (Erie, Pa) scored his first career goal and added an assist as the 8th ranked Miami University RedHawks beat the 3rd ranked Michigan Wolverines 4-2. Justin’s goal was short-handed.

CJ Blanchard and Mike Theetge of Horseheads High School in Elmira, NY each signed to play lacrosse at Division II Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. Blanchard, a midfielder, was a first-team all-league pick last season. He had 33 goals and 23 assists for the Blue Raiders during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He received a scholar-athlete award last season. Theetge, a defenseman and midfielder, had nine goals and four assists over the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He received a scholar-athlete award last season.

Nick Lopez (Erie Cathedral Prep) will be playing today in the 106th Army-Navy game, set for 2:35 pm at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. Go Army!

The one good thing our cable company in Meadville does is show CBS stations from Erie and Pittsburgh, so if anyone wants to watch the Steeler game Sunday in high definition and not in a smoky bar, let me know. :)
