Erie PA News and Events for Sunday December 4, 2005
The Pittsburgh Steelers game with Cincinnati today will not be shown in the Erie area. If you don’t have a DirecTV satellite dish with the NFL Sunday Package, head to a friends house or bar or a club. The same goes for the Pittsburgh-Cleveland game on Christmas eve.
Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor) will be playing at the Erie Civic Center Tullio Arena on March 7th. The ticket sale date has yet to be announced. Tickets should be a bit more expensive that the $3 or $4 cover charge I paid to see him/them at the Kings Rook Club a few years ago. Reznor hails from Mercer PA, an hour or so South of Erie.
Nora Mead Brownell, one of three members of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, spoke late last week about the need for energy infrastructure improvements including new power lines and more liquefied natural gas terminals. Brownell, a Republican appointed by President Bush, is a native of Erie, Pa. Her six-year term expires in June.
A couple of midwest high-speed rail lines are in the early talking stages. The US Senate passed the addition of a fund to provide federal money for future studies but the House didn’t include the same provision in a budget reconciliation last month, however a conference committee could restore it. One line would connect Chicago, Fort Wayne, Columbus and Pittsburgh. Another line would go from Cincinnati through Dayton and Columbus to Cleveland, then on to Erie, Pa, Buffalo and Toronto. Still another would go from Pittsburgh through Cleveland to Toledo and Chicago, with another spur heading for Detroit.

Josh Disher turned a 26-save performance to lead the Erie Otters to a 2-1 win over the Guelph Storm in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 4,025 at the Tullio Arena. The win ended an Otters franchise record nine-game losing streak. Patrick Lee and Anthony Peluso scored for the Otters while Justin Hodgman collected two assists. Nora Mead Brownell is the sister of one of the Meads at the Times News (Ed or Mike, can't remember which).
Her appointment to the post was one of the greatest cases in Erie history of a job "payback" in exchange for political support.
Ms. Brownell didn't even graduate from college, and she was originally appointed to this post over a number of other better-qualified candidates.
Brownell's appointment was pushed heavily by Tom Ridge, who supported her in exchange for the years and years of lavish "ass-kissing" articles that the Times News had done about him, and which they continue to do to this day.
