Erie PA News and Events for Tuesday December 6, 2005

Posted by Dennis on December 6, 2005

Erie City Council yesterday held a budget review session for the proposed 2006 budget They focused on the Public Works Department. Plans call for 19 workers to be layed-off with a savings of about $2.3 million. However, those 19 workers are teamsters with bumping rights so most of them will still have jobs next year. The workers losing their job could be garbagemen.

There were rumors a press conference scheduled today by Peek’n Peak Resort and Conference Center. Sherri Rater, Sales and Marketing Executive Assistant at the Peek, said it wasn’t so. Or maybe she’s just not in the loop. I thought maybe they were releasing details on the sale of the business.

Former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann will be in Erie on January 5th to announce he will run for governor on the Republican ticket.

A new tool for screening the impact a proposed project will have on threatened and endangered species in Pennsylvania is now available online. The Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory (PNDI) database will help developers save time and money and alert environmentalists wackos to potential threats to certain animals and plants. This system should be used for all PNDI Environmental Reviews, including those in conjunction with DEP Permits. The PNDI tool satisfies environmental review coordination with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the PA Fish and Boat Commission, the PA Game Commission and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

More than 2,600 people will be injured by fires during this festive time of the year and approximately $930 million in damages will occur. Erie Insurance Group shares these safety tips to protect your home and your family this holiday season: Check all electrical and extension cords and plugs to be sure they are in working condition. Don’t overload extension cords or electrical outlets. Inspect light strings and don’t use if you find gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, or worn, frayed or blackened wires. Have your electrical wiring checked and replace wiring if frayed or cracked. Check for proper size/rated fuses or circuit breakers for each circuit. When using lights outside, make sure plugs hang away from where snow or water can get inside and that they are UL approved and marked for outdoor use. Unplug all decorations when leaving the house or going to bed. Water your tree every day to prevent dryness and keep it from heating devices such as wood stoves and fireplaces. Christmas trees should not be sprayed with any type of lacquer to keep needles from falling. Never use real candles to decorate a tree. Do not leave lit candles or menorahs unattended. Keep them away from vents and flammable materials. Make sure they are in stable holders and placed where they will not be knocked down. Never put wrapping paper in a fireplace. It can throw off sparks and produce a chemical build up in the home that could cause an explosion.

Erie was included in the “Barbie Live in Fairytopia” tour dates announced yesterday. The show will play the Warner Theatre May 3-4.

The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) will be in Erie PA today to ask refugees from Bosnia to donate a couple of drops of blood for DNA testing in an effort to identify some of the more than 26,000 victims found in mass graves or dumped in forests. Since November 2001, the ICMP has made 8,652 matches between victims and surviving relatives. Well over 1,000 Bosnian refugees have settled in the Erie area with the help of the excellent work of the International Institute of Erie.

Beauty and the Beast will be performed at the Erie Playhouse December 7-11 and 14-18, 2005. For more info or tickets call the box office at 454-2852.

Anne Murray is coming to the Warner Theatre on Thursday December 8. Some tickets for “What a Wonderful Christmas” are still available. Call 452-4857 or visit Ticketmaster.com.

Mike Esposito will be leaving the Erie Freeze to become the head coach of the Odessa Roughnecks of the Intense Football League. A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday. I’ll be interesting to see if any players follow him to Texas.

Erie Otters forwards Mike Blunden and Ryan O’Marra were among the 34 players invited to take part in Canada’s National Junior Selection Camp being held December 11-16, 2005 at PNE in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Camp is in preparation for the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championships being played December 26, 2005 - January 5, 2006 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Jason Ward (1997), Brad Boyes (2001 and 2002) and Carlo Colaiacovo (2002 and 2003) are the only members of the Otters to have represented Canada at the World Junior Championships. Tim Connolly played for the United States in 1999 while Arvid Rekis represented Latvia in 1998 and 1999.

So Dennis, will you be running to the polls for the primary to place your vote for Mr. Lynn Swann?

Contrary to the information listed above, there is no press conference scheduled at Peek'n Peak Resort & Conference Center. The media will be well informed as to any news worthy events taking place at or regarding our facility.

Thank you.

Why is Swann making his announcement in Erie?

Posted by: eden at December 6, 2005 12:23 PM

Rich - Yes, unlike Bill Scranton, Swann isn't a career politician.
Eden - He's visiting about a dozen cities to make the announcement.

Posted by: Dennis at December 6, 2005 11:12 PM

I'll vote for Swann only if his running mate is Mean Joe Greene.
