Erie PA News and Events for Saturday December 17, 2005

Old-fashioned type post card by the talented Ron Richardson. Click on the image for a full size view. His Flick.com photos can be seen here and his photography site can be found here.
The City of Erie sent out two week notices to 26 city employees. Many were politcal appointees that will be replaced when Mayor-elect Joe Sinnott takes office the first week of January. Erie City Council must still figure out a way to either cut about $4 million from the budget or raise taxes and fees. Council must pass a balanced budget my December 31. Current Mayor Rick Filippi has already stated that he will veto any property tax increase. Pennsylvania Act 47 is the law that allows the state to take over cities that qualify for ‘distressed city status.’ Every day that passes, this looks more likely.

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College will hold its Fall commencement ceremony beginning at noon Saturday, Dec. 17, in the Junker Center. Some 166 students are graduating from Erie. This fall’s graduating class will earn 133 bachelor’s degrees, 20 master’s degrees and 13 associate degrees.

The Allegheny Chamber Singers will present a free recital in Ford Memorial Chapel at Allegheny College on Sunday, Dec 18 at 3:15 pm. The program will include duets and trios drawn from oratorio and sacred song. The opening piece will feature all 16 singers in “Silent Devotion and Response” from Ernest Bloch’s Sacred Service. It will be sung in Hebrew and accompanied by Ward Jamison on the organ.

The Toronto St Michael’s Majors beat the Erie Otters 3-1 in an Ontario Hockey League game played Friday night in front of 3,954 at the Tullio Arena. The Otters wrap up the first half of the season Saturday night when the Windsor Spitfires visit the Tullio Arena for a 7:30 pm start. The game can also be seen live on the Image Sports Network (Adelphia Channel 12 in Erie County and Time Warner Channel 20 in the City of Erie).
Michael Machuga of Erie, Pa lost in the Round of 8 and cashed for $5,100 at the PBA Tour Empire State Classic.

Er... I don't think those pictures are exactly from Ron.

What do you mean, Richardz? That's a recent picture of Erie, with a little photoshop magic. I think it came out pretty cool. And whoever designed the cover for Mr. Kowalski's book, you get an A. That's a nice design.

That one picture was taken by Ron but C-Rolla used it and was the actual creator of the old fashioned Christmas card (there are two).

Bill Kowalski was part of the Creative Writers Institute of Honors, a course led by Dr. Ken Schiff at Mercyhurst College. I was actually part of this group in my junior year of high school at Strong Vincent. I went to a reading of Eddie's Bastard by Bill at Mercyhurst at a Writers Institute reunion a few years ago; He's an excellent author.

This is a comment to Mr. Know it all DAN. First of all the Cadillac Escalade was purchased way before ION was even in business. It was a personal vehicle that was used. And the ION Logo was placed on it. So don’t hate. Maybe one day if you work hard you can have a Vehicle close to it. I think the problem was envy seeing a Successful Black man riding in a car such as that. If you had problem with the car I was driving you could have been a man and asked. We provided excellent benefits to our members and great community service. Another correction that needs to be made is that we did not have a problem signing up members, being we were the number ONE MCO in Erie County and other counties that we operated in. We did that in just a year and a couple of months of operations. The problem is people like you never looking deeper in to what is going on and just running off at the mouth.
Ps. See you next Baseball Season.
