Erie PA News and Events for Saturday December 24, 2005
Seems that one of the last things that County Executive Rick Schenker will do before leaving office is ignite a firestorm of controversy. Schenker sent out a letter on official county stationary soliciting funds for Chi Alpha Campus Ministries so they can start chapters at the local Erie colleges. Schenker paid for the stationary, envelopes and postage himself. From 1992 to 1995, Schenker was Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Christian Coalition. In 1996 he was then given the political patronage job of Northwestern PA spokesman for PennDOT.
MTR Gaming is one of three casino companies in the hunt for the slots license for Pittsburgh. MTR is currently building Presque Isle Downs Racetrack and slot machine only casino in Erie. On Friday, MTR released their proposal for the Pittsburgh casino. They plan on spending $1 billion to develop the Pittsburgh site. That’s one BILLION dollars - $1,000,000,000. MTR’s plans include a new hotel, an entertainment complex, offices and condominiums. And MTR bitched for months about a couple of dollars for development costs in Erie?
Erie PA native PFC Hillary Doody recently joined the 101st Airborne Division band as a vocalist. The band is currently performing their Christmas show in Iraq.
Peter Kay of Erie has been named Director of the proposed Toledo Science and Technology Corridor. Kay was most recently the president and chief executive officer of the Economic Development Corp of Erie County (PA).
On December 28th, 7:30 pm, the Joe Lovano and Quintet will play at Porters Restaurant, 123 West 14th St, Erie, PA. Call 452-2787 for tickets. Performing with Lovano will be wife and vocalist Judi Silvano, Carmen Castaldi on drums, Oberlin (OH) professor Dan Wall on keyboards, and Youngstown State U (OH) professor Dave Morgan on string bass. Tickets are $15 for JazzErie and Erie Art Museum members, $5 for students with ID; all others are $18 in advance, $20 at the door.
The Erie McDowell High School Football team will join the WPIAL beginning with the 2006 season. Wow. But it makes sense. D-10 chairman Wally Blucas didn’t seem to understand why McDowell would do this. But then again Wally would have trouble with the concept of a 1-on-1 basketball game. Erie Central just moved to down to Class AAA which leaves only powerhouse Erie Cathedral Prep in District 10 Quad A. Last year, McDowell travelled 325 miles to Dayton, Ohio for a game so the 100 miles to the Northern Pittsburgh suburbs will seem like a short drive. The Trojans will most likely be in a conference with Butler, Seneca Valley, Shaler, North Hills and North Allegheny.

Is it a good move for McDowell's football program? Are they a good enough team to compete with teams down it Pittsburgh? After all they wont' be playing there JV or freshman games down there. How is Joe going to build his under class to play against teams like McKees Port or Mount Lebanon.

I'm honored to be in the entry today! It's like being on the news (in a good way).
So it's just the McD football team? Basketball & such wil still be travelling to Altoona, State College, etc.? I mean, they're still D10, no? You can't change your geography.
