Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday December 28, 2005
Erie City Council will vote to pass the budget for 2006 at their meeting tonight. Mayor Rick Filippi said he won’t veto it because council has enough votes to override any veto. It includes a property tax increase, an earned income tax increase, a sewer rate increase, a garbage rate increase and an amusement tax on tickets for sporting events, concerts and shows. The number of police officers will drop to 164 and the number of firefighters will drop to 151. Happy Holidays from Erie City Council.
Erie County Executive-elect Mark DiVecchio named a few members of his administration. For the most part, DiVecchio seems to be naming people qualified for jobs and not just political hacks. Wallace Knox II was named Erie County Solicitor. He served before as solicitor under Republican Robbie Robison. Ines Massella was named as a lawyer for the Office of Children and Youth. Gary Lucht will keep his job as Director of the Office of Children and Youth. Lucht has worked with Massella before in the Erie County court system. Tony Logue will be Erie County Public Defender. That seems a little political. Logue has run for office and was a solicitor for the Erie Airport Authority and Erie County Council. Shawn Wiley will be the new Director of Economic Development. He has no government experience which should actually be a plus. Charles Barber, Director of Human Services, Ann Bloxdorf, Director of Administration and Thomas Lyons, Director of Finance will all keep their jobs in an administration changing from Republican to Democratic control.
I opened my mail yesterday to find a check for $7.62 from the Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate for their claim against Utility.com. The company didn’t give the required 90 day notice when they stopped operating in Pennsylvania in 2001. The refund represent 1/4 the amount I would have saved during that 90-day period with them over Penelec.
Joseph Scriven visited the Middle East and was inspired to write a poem. He sent it to his Mother in Ireland and to a few friends back home in Port Hope, Ontario. The Port Hope Evening Guide published the poem. Someone used that newspaper to wrap a package bound for New York City. That person in NYC just happen to look at the newspaper and read the poem. She loved the little poem and asked the New York newspaper to republish it. They did. A traveling salesman clipped the poem. The salesman visited the Burdette Organ and Manufacturing Company in Erie, PA. The poem fell out of his order book as he was talking to company GM Charles Converse. As well as being a business leader and lawyer, Charles Crozat Converse of Erie was also a well known composer of music. He studied music in Germany and was a friend of both Franz Liszt and LouÂis Spohrs.Converse put the poem to music. He studied music in Germany and was a friend of both Franz Liszt and Louis Spohrs. Converse put the poem to music. He called the tune “Erie” after our fair city. The little poem is the hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”
