Erie PA News and Events for Thursday January 5, 2006

Posted by Dennis on January 5, 2006

Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott and Erie City Council sat down and listened to a couple of money saving suggestions the consulting firm of Resource Development and Management. The scheduling of Erie Firefighters was one concern. Currently firefighters work one 24 hour shift and then have 3 days off. Changing that to working 24 hours and then having only 2 days off would save an estimated $1.8 million and would mean 24 positions could be cut. The handling of promotions and job duties with the Erie Police was also mentioned. Over half of Erie Police officers are in supervisory positions. Cripe, what do they do. Mange each other?? And as far as job duties go, many officers are handling chores which could be handled by non-uniformed personnel putting more cops on the street.

Two Crawford County meth labs were raided yesterday. One in Titusville and another in Beaver Township. The Beaver Township bust was huge, more of a factory operation than individuals producing for themselves. A state trooper spotted the car of Doyle Moore parked on the wrong side of a road. He ran the plates and found that Moore was wanted for a crime in Ohio. Good job of keeping a low profile. They go to arrest him and find meth cooking everywhere on his property. This is your brain on drugs Mr Moore.

Lynn Swann will be in Erie today to kick off his campaign for Pennsylvania Governor.

For an area renowned and ridiculed for huge amounts of snow, once again the Highmark Quad Games Cross County Ski and Snowshoe Race has been postponed due to lack of snow. It’s just amazing how often this has to be rescheduled. Seems like almost every year. The event was originally scheduled for Jan 8th and has been pushed back to Jan 15.

Bob Gaughan has won the Life Drive in 05. Bob Gaughan is the father of WSEE part-time reporter Kelly Gaughan. Mr Gaughan was picked out of over 20,000 entries to day in front of the blood bank at noon. Larry New of New Motors picked the winner. New Motors generously donated a beautiful red 2005 Volvo S40, which has been at the blood bank for the past 10 months as part of the blood bank’s biggest promotion in its 38 year history. It’s a 2-year lease worth about $10,000. The Life Drive in 05 ran from March 1st through December 31st, and was for blood donors at any CBB blood drive. Every time a person donated blood, they got to enter to win. Mr. Gaughan donated 5 times, the maximum he could donate during the event. “This was such HUGE event for us.” Said Dan Desrochers, Director Public Relations at the Community Blood Bank. “We had a great 2005 at the blood bank with the car generating lots of buzz among donors. We are also very please to see that a Mr. Gaughan won, because he comes in as often as he can to donate blood and help save lives.” The Community Blood Bank continues to need over 800 donors each week to meet the needs of patients in its 7 county service area. The Community Blood Bank is the exclusive supplier of blood products to all the hospitals in Erie, McKean, Warren and Elk Counties and is the preferred provider to all the hospitals in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany Counties in New York. Only blood donated with Community Blood Bank will help patients at these local hospitals.

Tom Ridge of Erie, former governor of Pennsylvania who served as the first U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, has been named as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the National Organization on Disability. Ridge, 59, has tinnitus and a hearing loss as a result of his military service and wears a hearing aid. Ridge is a 1967 honors graduate of Harvard and holds a law degree from the Dickinson School of Law. He was drafted into the army during law school and served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star for Valor. He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the US Congress when he won that office in 1982. He was twice elected governor of Pennsylvania.

Bobby Schindler, brother of Terri Schiavo will be the keynote speaker at the 28th annual People for Life Pro-Life Prayer Breakfast to be held Jan 7 at 9 am at the Avalon Hotel in Erie, PA. Since his sister’s death on March 31, 13 days after her feeding tube was removed by court order, Bobby has left his teaching position and as spokesman for the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation, travels across the country, appearing in numerous speaking engagements, devoting himself to raising public awareness about euthanasia.

The World Famous Harlem Globetrotters will perform at the Erie Civic Center Tullio Arena on February 5th. Tickets run from $15 to $61.

Scott Browning is being named as Edinboro University of Pennsylvania head football coach today. The press conference is scheduled for 3 pm. Browning was the recruiting coordinator, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach last year. He’s been at the school for 20 years. Former head coach Lou Tepper left Edinboro University to take over at Indiana of Pennsylvania.

Money instead of common sense rules sports as well as politics in the Erie area. District 10 turned down the McDowell move to District 7 for football only. There are only 2 Class AAAA schools in District 10 - McDowell and Cathedral Prep. There are 23 Class AAAA schools in District 7 and a 24th would have been perfect for scheduling. But all the money for the District 10 Class AAAA champiopnship game between McDowell and Cathedral Prep goes to District 10 and not the schools. The game draws 7-10 thousand people every year. McDowell should just say screw them and refuse to play the game. McDowell will now have to travel up to 300 miles to play opponents instead of the 100 miles to play the WPIAL schools.

Jeff Voris has been named the 24th head football coach at Butler University. Prior to taking over as head coach at Carroll College in 2001, he served for one season (2000-01) as offensive coordinator at Edinboro University.

Gannon’s Shelby Chaney (Warren, Ohio/Warren G Harding) has been named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for his performance during the holiday break. Chaney led Gannon to a perfect 3-0 record during the holiday break, averaging 19 points and 14 rebounds in three games.
