Erie PA News and Events for Friday January 6, 2006

We elect morons to state office, not just locally. In December, the Pennsylvania House passed a bill by Rep Mario Scavello, R-Monroe, that cut property taxes but increase other taxes. The current 6 percent sales tax would apply to new items, including advertising, assets management, other management and consulting services and raise the personal income tax rate from 3.07 percent to 3.29 percent. Yesterday, at a State Senate committee hearing Erie Insurance Group Senior Executive Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel Jann Van Gorder said that a new tax on management and consulting services would increase costs for ERIE and that his firm would move its headquarters staff to Ohio. Two seconds later, Scavello has said he was willing to restore the management and consulting exemption.
