Erie PA News and Events for Saturday January 7, 2006

Posted by Dennis on January 7, 2006

Monsignor Charles M Kavanagh, a NY Archdiocese Catholic priest accused of sexual assault, will be tried by a church tribunal with the trial held in Erie, PA. The trial will be conducted behind closed doors by a tribunal of three or five canon law judges. No date has been set. Hey, Mercyhurst College could always hire him while he’s waiting for the trial to start. Why is this being held in Erie? Reduced media coverage.

The US Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center reported a small earthquake in Lake Erie. The 2.6 magnitude “micro earthquake” happened at 10:02 pm Thursday night . It was centered about 60 miles SW of Erie, about 6 miles off the shore of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio at 41.770 degrees N, 81.450 degrees W.

A man was shot in the rear end at the Granada Apartments. He went to the hospital but it’s not serious. I remeber when Granada was a nice place to live and not the trailer park without the trailers it has become.

The US Department of Agriculture recently released the Pennsylvania Agricultural Statistics Annual Summary for 2004-2005. In 2004, Erie County PA had 1285 farms totaling 165,000 acres for an average of 128 acres per farm. Crop values were estimated at $32,471,000. For some strange reason the figures don’t include vineyards or grapes. The most popular crop for Erie County farmers is potatoes with Erie County being the top potato producing county in the state. I’d bet this has a lot to do with Troyer Farms making all those potato chips.

Dennis, was the crack on Mercyhurst necessary, this is truly an outstanding liberal arts college and should never have anything to do the employment of a accused sexual predator. Not cool.

You are mostly correct.
Mercyhurst College should never have *had* anything to do the employment of a accused sexual predator... but they hired Dr Garvey anyway and promoted him to the position of college president. Good school or not, if they hired (alleged) perverts, they should be called on it.

I'm sorry but,Dr.Garvey was never convicted of anything, unless you know something that we don't.The man has done nothing but good thing for that college and Mercyhurst should be thankful for that not blasted because you think he's a pervert.Perhaps the pot smoking LSD tripping professor that made these allegation needs to get his facts straight so that people like you don't go off half cocked..

I find it distrubing that your sticking up for an alleged child molester.

Do you not remember what Judge Palmisano said after Mercyhurst shut down the investigation?
Direct quote from a Times News article, 17th paragraph down: http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051028/FRONTPAGE/510280364&SearchID=7323197895915
>>Garvey announced his retirement the day after a college-paid investigator, retired Erie County Judge Michael M. Palmisano, wrote a confidential memo to the Mercyhurst board of trustees in which he said the claims against Garvey "appear to have merit.">>

Ten, count'em 10, different people have accused Gavey of molesting them when they were boys. It seems the only reason Garvey hasn't been convicted is because Mercyhurst College and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie swept them under the rug. He's lucky there is a statute of limitations or he'd be facing trial.

O.J. Simpson was never "convicted" of anything either. Are you going to tell us that HE didn't do anything either?

William Garvey is GUILTY, and the only reason he isn't in prison is because of the statute of limitations. There is no doubt that Garvey worked to build up Mercyhurst College over a period of 25 years.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that Garvey was (and still is) a dangerous sexual predator. I'm also not surprised to hear your characterization of Chuck Roesenthal as a " pot smoking LSD tripping professor".

Those kinds of attacks on Roesenthal's character were part of a very calculated "spin effort" used by Garvey protectors in their shameless
all-or-nothing attempt to protect Garvey and sweep the entire thing under the table.

The biggest sign of just how much of a degenerate institution Mercyhurst is happened when the true details of the Palmisano memo were exposed.

Marlene Mosco, and the corrupt board hired retired Judge Mike Palimisano and a seasoned team of investigators to look into the allegations. Then they got rid of Palmisano and hid the results of his investigation when they didn't like what he had to tell them (that the allegations have "merit".)

Then Mercyhurst tries to get attention off itself by claiming to be conducting a "nationwide search" for a new President only to appoint a college insider (and close Garvey associate) in the end. What a sham.

Mercyhurst College an "outstanding Liberal Arts College"?? Hardly, unless you count Erie County as the whole world and with no other colleges to compare it to.

Mercyhurst has only two very good programs- INTELLIGENCE, and ANTHROPOLOGY. That's it. Aside from that, it's a pretty mediocre college compared to other places and significantly overpriced.

I'm glad Dennis made the comment he did. Because it's important that people don't forget what happened up at Mercyhurst. No matter how much others want it "swept" under the table.
