Erie PA News and Events for Sunday January 8, 2006
Ian Murray wants the job he was fired from nearly 12 years ago. No private business would re-hire someone who has been fired from their job for wrongdoing but Erie County might. Murray wants a position in the Erie County Public Defender’s Office. Murray was fired for having coerced a client of the Erie County Public Defender’s Office to have sex with him. He was her lawyer. Criminal charges were never filed. I’m sure nearly all of you would have rather taken a chance of poor representation and going to prison, or committing suicide, rather than have anything to do with Murray, but she was an (alleged) coke-head, exotic dancer (prostitute). Newly appointed Chief Public Defender Tony Logue has said that Murray is qualified for the position. This smacks of a political payback since both are active with the Erie Democratic Party. Murray was recently fired by the voters from his job as an Erie City Councilman for having helped push the city into a financial crisis. Murray needs to get a job in the private sector. If he can’t get any clients in private practice as an attorney perhaps there is a bridge somewhere that needs a troll.
All throughout his campaign for Erie County Executive, Mark DiVecchio said he was against giving MTR Gaming a kickback subsidy for the construction of Presque Isle Downs. He changed his mind the moment he took office. DiVecchio now want to give MTR between $9.9 million and $14.4 for infrastructure costs. It’s just to bad the the voters can’t change their minds, and their votes.
Lori Jakiela grew up in the small Western Pennsylvania town of Trafford PA. Her dream was to become a writer and move to New York City. After graduating from Gannon University in Erie she moved to NYC. To make ends meet as a struggling writer she became a flight attendant traveling back and forth to European destinations. She realized that it just wasn’t for her. Home was in Trafford. She has since married and after her Mother died moved back into her childhood home. Jakiela is now an Associate Professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Her first book, “Miss New York Has Everything,” a memoir, has just been published. It will released for sale on Jan 23.

If your book gets mention on Oprah or the Don Imus Show, your sales increase. The same is now true of Erie Blogs. Erie author James Stumpo passed along a thanks and said that his new book The Ambassador’s Agenda moved into position 36 in the Buy.com Suspense listings, up 5 positions from when I posted about it the other day. Mr Stumpo said he is seeking an agent to represent and promote his book to some motion picture companies. Maybe it could be the fist major studio production for Erie Director/Writer/Producer John C Lyons and his Lyons Den Productions.

"If he can't get any clients in private practice as an attorney perhaps there is a bridge somewhere that needs a troll."
Hehehehe. If he manages to be qualified for that job, let me know which bridge so I can avoid it.

When Ian was asked about why he wasn't running in the Spring 2005 Democratic Primary, he hinted of how the financial compensation the Mayor's job offers ($65,000 a year) would be a sacrifice for him due to his growing family (two small children), and his financial responsibilities. Ian bought a pretty big house on upper state street, and of course the $60,000 kitchen he put in last year made plenty of headlines.
And in recent comments this past fall, Ian talked about how he's been working hard to build up his private law practice as he got ready to leave council.
That's why it's so surprising to hear Ian is interested in this public defenders job. Didn't the newspaper say that the job paid between $48,000 and $60,000 a year?
If Ian needs to make big money (as he indicated), why would he be interested in this job?

Although he's done some bad things in the past, from what I hear, he's pretty devoted to his new wife and babies.
