Erie PA News and Events for Monday January 9, 2006
The confirmation hearings begin today for Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito. Erie PA native Mark Dwyer, Chief of Appeals at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, attended classes with Alito and they knew each other as undergrads at Princeton. They then both attended law school at Yale and were roomates for 3 years. Dwyer said he has no lampshade on the head stories about Alito, as Alito rarely went out. Alito had the nickname of ‘Felix’, as in Felix of the Odd Couple, at law school because he was so neat and organized.
In looking for info about Erie PA, I often run into things about Erie Colorado. The Denver Regional Council of Governments reported that Erie, CO was the fastest growing town in their metro area in 2005 with a population increase of 28 percent. Since 2000, the population has more than doubled from 6,291 in 2000 to 12,748 at the end of 2005. The former coal town was first settled by the Reverend Richard Van Valkenburg, a Methodist minister from Erie, Pennsylvania, who named it after his hometown.
I had the oil changed in my car over the weekend. As the guy was explaining the services they performed, checking the wipers, etc, he said “Normally we check the tire inflation but noticed that you had green valve caps. They’re filled with nitrogen and since nitrogen doesn’t leak out like air does, we didn’t check them.” Think I said “REALLY!” five times. Guess I wasn’t paying attention when I bought my tires at Dunn Tire. My gas milage has increased about 7 percent. Thought it was just the new tires. Must be the combo of the tires and the fact that they’re filled with nitrogen. Nitrogen filled tires are supposed to get 3-5 percent better fuel mileage.

When we lived in CO for a year, we lived very near Erie, CO. There was something kind of comforting about seeing signs on I-25 for "Erie." :)
