Two Erie School District teachers were reportly suspended for having downloaded porn onto district owned computers. Note to other Erie teachers - after deleting the images you have downloaded, empty the recycle bin. The District blocks sites such as Xanga and MySpace but teachers can download porn. Sounds about right.
Former Erie mayor Rick Filippi is once again in private law practice. He’s representing a lady suing the city that fell on city property while he was mayor. Wonder if he named himself as a defendant.
This day in Erie PA history. The first railroad line in Erie was the Erie and Northeast Railroad. Their first train arriving January 10, 1852.
Buffalo just increased their sales tax one half percent to 8.75 percent. Every retail store in Erie on upper Peach Street says thank you.
On Thursday, Allegheny College will hold a press conference to announce they will receive a $1.5 million in Redevelopment Assistance Capital program (RACP) funding from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to assist with construction of a Theater and Communication Arts Center.

The Pennsylvania Small Business Advantage grants will help companies buy new equipment or implement new processes that will conserve energy, reduce costs and promote pollution prevention. Two area companies received grants. Sanders Brothers of Corry will receive $7,500 to purchase and install high efficiency T-8 lighting and power factor correction systems to conserve energy in use of air compressor systems. Szymanski Coin Laundry in Crawford County will receive $7,439 to purchase and install new high efficiency washing machines to conserve energy and water and decrease wastewater generation.
Christine Smith took over recently as director of the Pioneer Florida Museum and Village. PFMV showcases the early days of the Sunshine State. Smith has degrees in political science and history from Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania. Early America is her specialty.
The Erie Art Museum is set to open “Accidental Documentaries: Paintings and Drawings by Mike Long” today, Tuesday, Jan 10. The exhibit, housed in the Frame Shop Gallery, will feature various works by Long and is open until March 17. Mike Long’s photorealist paintings and drawings are portraits that “document very specific times and spaces that I have experienced in the last few years of constantly moving from one place to another.” He creates a sense of mystery with what he leaves out. Long teaches art at SUNY Fredonia. He was featured in the May 2002 issue of “New American Paintings,” and won a Juror’s award in the 2004 Spring Show at the Erie Art Museum. The Frame Shop Gallery is always free and is open during regular Frame Shop hours, Tuesday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday 11 am to 5 pm. Dr Harm de Blij, author, geography professor and television personality, will speak at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center at Mercyhurst College Tuesday, Jan 10, at 8:15 pm. For seven years, de Blij was the popular geography editor at ABC’s “Good Morning America.” His talk is free and open to the public.
Tickets for the Nine Inch Nails March 7th show in Erie go on sale Saturday, January 14th at 10 am. Here’s the info from Ticketmaster. Tickets are $34.50 plus tax and fees so figure about $40 per.
Tickets are still available for the 23rd edition of the McDonald’s High School Basketball Classic which will be held in Erie PA on Friday, January 13 and Saturday, January 14, 2006 at Gannon University’s Hammermill Center, 6th and Peach Streets. General Admission tickets at $7 per night in advance for adults and $5 in advance for students are available at Cathedral Prep, the Erie Sport Stores, the Avalon Hotel, Dee’s News, and Erie area McDonald’s Restaurants while they last. Reserved tickets are sold out. Milwaukee Rufus King High, New York’s Mount Vernon High, Chester (PA) High and the host team Cathedral Prep make up the field.
The Erie Philharmonic presents “Immortal Mozart ” on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 8 pm.
The 2006 Bridal Showcase and Expo will be held at the Erie Civic Center Tullio Arena on Jan 15, 2006 at 11 am and 3 pm.
The Highmark Quad Games Cross County Ski and Snowshoe Race has been postponed due to lack of snow. Yes, Erie and lack of snow. Go figure. The event was originally scheduled for Jan 8th and has been pushed back to Jan 15. It might be postponed again because temps are expected to be in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s all week.
Mercyhurst College will host the annual Brain Bee on Saturday, Feb 11, and is looking for a few good brains to participate in the competition based on knowledge of the neuroscience field. Area high school students are encouraged to participate and earn a chance to represent Northwest Pennsylvania at the International Brain Bee held in March at the University of Maryland. Questions are pulled from the Society for Neuroscience publication Brain Facts. Gary Paparelli has resigned as Iroquois High School varsity boys basketball coach.
The Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team advanced to 5th in the latest USCHO.com Division I Poll. The Number 5 ranking equals the highest ever achieved by the program in this, its seventh season.
Look like the Detroit Tigers will assign OF Brent Clevlen to the Erie SeaWolves. Clevlen hit .302, had 14 SB and hit 18 HR’s for Class A Lakeland last year. He was MVP of the Florida State League and was recently added to the Tigers 40 man roster.
