Yesterday was the dead of Winter in Erie PA. The day of the year with the lowest average temperatures. It hit 45 degrees and the low was only 34. As I write this it’s 51 degrees. Love it. But don’t be fooled. This is a ‘wait till your father get’s home’ type of weather. We will still get smacked in the rear with cold temps and snow before it’s Springtime in Erie.
The Office of the Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight released figures that show that the in the Erie metro area, housing appreciation rose 3.75 percent from the third quarter of 2005 to the 4th quarter of 2005. This lags behind the state average and the national average. The good news - the cost of housing in Erie is very affordable. If you have any kind of job, you can buy a house. The bad news - you aren’t getting a very good return on your investment. As a real estate agent, I’d say that for about the past five years, real estate prices have only been growing at about 1 percent over inflation. Part of the reason is due to rising property taxes. If the county, school districts and municipalities keep jacking up taxes, values will continue to rise very slowly. The average home price in the Erie area is about $111,000.

Joe Beck of Erie, Pa embraced his daughter Jennifer Beck after she took the oath of office for the New Jersey State General Assembly. Beck represents the 12th District.

The most talked about play in the world over the last five years has certainly been The Vagina Monologues. Described as an exploration of that part of a woman that people usually don’t want to talk about, The Vagina Monologues is a sold out sensation everywhere it plays. The Vagina Monologues opened last weekend at the Roadhouse Theatre, and will be performed Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm. A special Valentine’s Day performance will be held Tuesday, February 14th, with an art sale to benefit SafeNet of Erie and the Roadhouse Theatre. For reservations and information, phone the Roadhouse Theatre box office at 814-456-5656.
The 2006 Bridal Showcase and Expo will be held at the Erie Civic Center Tullio Arena on Jan 15, 2006 at 11 am and 3 pm.
Winter classes in acting and singing are now being offered by the Erie Playhouse Youtheatre for students ages 5 to 16. Classes are Saturdays, February 4 through March 18. Each qualified instructor, working in a safe environment at the Erie Playhouse Rehearsal Hall, 919 State St., will focus on the student’s needs, building a positive self image, while students learn to work with their peers through the art of theatre. Acting classes are taught by Angela Harmelink and Craig Kosnik, both graduates of college theatre programs at Gannon University and Emerson College. Kate Amatuzzo, music major at Mercyhurst College, will teach the singing class. Classes meet once a week for seven consecutive weeks. The class fee for each seven week session is $50. A $10, non-refundable deposit will secure a student’s place in class. The $40 balance must accompany the student to their first class. All class sizes limited to 15 students.

The Illinois women’s basketball team (10-4) hosts Penn State (7-8) Thursday night. This will be the first meeting between Chelsea Gordon (Illinois) and Mashea Williams (Penn State) since they were teammates at Mercyhurst Prep High School winning back to back state championships.
