Erie PA News and Events for Friday January 13, 2006
David Gonzalez, director of Latino services for the Hispanic American Council of Erie, was elected to fill the position on Erie City Council when Joe Sinnott resigned to become mayor. The voting done by council members took ten ballots.
Saint Andrew Elementary School, 606 Raspberry Street, could be closing next year as enrollment continues to decline. The Roman Catholic school now has fewer than 100 students. I wonder if any of the Catholic schools in Erie ever considered endowments. These schools should have millions saved up.
Jeff Peifer must have more money than common sense. He is going to open a strip club called Classy Tails in the former Goofie’s Tavern at 12th and Raspberry. He will be spending most of his days writing out checks to the city for zoning code violations and to his attorney trying to fight them.
Texas has drive in liquor stores, not Erie PA. Apparently the drunk guy that needed another bottle that drove through the window of the Wine and Spirits store at 18th and Peach didn’t know.
Former Erie mayor Rick Filippi will have his trial held in Washington County, in SW Pennsylvania. Filippi and two partner purchased land near the former Hammermill plant with hopes of profiting from the deal if MTR Gaming would have placed Presque Isle Downs at the site.
I was asked what ever happened to Lisa Zompa. She was a news reader for WSEE, Channel 35. When her contract was up with the station, it wasn’t renewed. The days of TV anchors in Erie making big money are long gone. With 100 cable channels, the stations just don’t have the revenue anymore. Plus, I think the stations learned they can stick nearly anyone in a chair to read a teleprompter and not lose viewers. Lisa Zompa Neitupski is now the manager of member services for the Manufacturers’ Association of Northwest Pennsylvania.
As part of a nationwide initiative to increase readiness, the Pennsylvania National Guard has implemented the Guard Recruiting Assistance Program, or G-RAP, which provides financial incentives to current National Guard members who recruit new personnel. Considered a “strength from within” program, Guard members who enlist a soldier receive up to $2,000 per new recruit. The recruiter for the Erie area is Master Sergeant Timothy Elder, 814-772-8219.
Recently, Erie PA based Spectrum Control closed on the sale of the former Murata Erie plant near Harrisburg. Yesterday, they held a job fair in Harrisburg taking in 325 applications for 130 positions. The area CareerLink office has been handing out 30 to 40 applications for Spectrum every day.
For four long, backbreaking days, Marine combat engineers and infantrymen unearthed cache after cache of insurgent ordnance and weaponry in and around Hit, Iraq during Operation Hedgehog. Marines from the Combat Engineer Platoon, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines kicked off the operation with a search of long-suspected hide sites throughout Hit and soon began unearthing treasure troves of insurgent arms. Acting on a tip, the Marines carefully searched a cemetery and found caches in grave spots adorned with both head and foot markers. Shouldering the bulk of the effort were the individual combat engineers like those led by squad leader Corporal Jeffrey R Wass, an Erie, PA native who deployed with most of the CEB platoon to Afghanistan in 2004.
Joy Jolin has been promoted from within the company to the position of Regional Vice President of Operations responsible for Crestline Hotels 12 select service hotels. Joy has been with Crestline since 2000 and most recently served as the General Manager for the Crestline-managed Courtyard by Marriott at Baltimore Inner Harbor. Joy holds a BA in hotel, restaurant and institutional management from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. Joy will be based at the Crestline offices in McLean, VA.
Butler County recently took bids for a new jail. Nine bids were submitted for plumbing and fire protection. The low bid was $2.8 million. The high bid was just under $4 million from WT Spaeder of Erie. Cripe, way to be competitive guys.

The most talked about play in the world over the last five years has certainly been The Vagina Monologues. Described as an exploration of that part of a woman that people usually don’t want to talk about, The Vagina Monologues is a sold out sensation everywhere it plays. The Vagina Monologues opened last weekend at the Roadhouse Theatre, and will be performed Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm. A special Valentine’s Day performance will be held Tuesday, February 14th, with an art sale to benefit SafeNet of Erie and the Roadhouse Theatre. For reservations and information, phone the Roadhouse Theatre box office at 814-456-5656.

The Otters (16-20-3-1) return to action tomorrow tonight at the Tullio Arena when the Toronto St Michael’s Majors arrive for a 7:30 pm start.
The Erie SeaWolves announced the cancellation of the 2006 Hot Stove Banquet, scheduled for January 26, 2006. The SeaWolves are calling off the event due to schedule conflicts of the 2006 SeaWolves coaching staff and special guests. Translation - they don’t want to spend the money. The two or three of you that were planning on attending will have to find something else to do.
Michael Machuga of Erie is in second place at the PBA Dick Weber Open being held in Fountain Valley, CA. Machuga had two 300 games yesterday.
