Erie PA News and Events for Sunday January 15, 2006

Posted by Dennis on January 15, 2006

He doesn’t want to race the truck but he does want to get into a race. Pat Harkins announced he will run against Linda Bebko Jones for the Democratic nomination for the 1st District seat in the state House of Representatives. Harkins is a driver for UPS. During his announcement he cited that Jones voted to give herself a pay raise. That’s a huge sore spot in the eyes of the voters. His father was former Erie City Councilman ‘Babe’ Harkins and his brother is Erie School Director John Harkins. Republican Christine Pontoriero previously announced she will be a candidate for the seat.

It’s not very often that I point out Erie newspaper articles, but this one is good. Yeah, annoying registration required. The Erie County Office of Children and Youth is a mess both in how it operates and how it spends money. Your average crack head takes better care of their money than this agency. Gary Lucht, appointed director of the department in November, said a mileage reimbursement stuck his as odd. An aide received nearly $35,000 in 2005 for the 71,000 plus miles she claimed she drove while working in 2005. No she wasn’t a truck driver, she is an aide with the agency. She would have had to average nearly 40 miles per hour worked to put those kind of miles on her vehicle.

Michelle Sanner of Erie started a sign language club in high school. She then studied speech and language pathology as well as deaf education at IUP. after graduation, Sanner became a speech teacher in the Cornell School District , outside of Pittsburgh. One again she has started a sign language club, this time for the middle and high school students in her district.

Time to plug another Erie writer. Erin McCarty has visited Central Pennsylvania’s Little Pine Valley throughout her life and absorbed the family narratives that surround it. Available of sale is her book The Land That Gives and Takes Away: Reflections on Little Pine Valley that tells her story of those visits.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced they are giving $200,000 to a group working to acquire a parcel of land along Avonia Road in Fairview. The 3 1/2 acre spot is across from Trout Run and includes 150 yards of Lake Erie frontage. The Fish and Boat Commission used money from the Lake Erie trout stamp.

The Erie Playhouse Youtheatre presents a production of The Wizard of Oz, with David Matthews directing his final Youtheatre show before his retirement. Performances will be held today and January 20-22. For information and tickets, call 814-454-2952.

The 2006 Bridal Showcase and Expo will be held at the Erie Civic Center Tullio Arena today at 11 am and 3 pm.

As part of the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day events, a march will be held at Noon on Monday from Perry Square to the Martin Luther King Center, 312 Chestnut St.

Nigerian-born artist, Michael Olugbile will present a Ceramic Workshop on Monday, Jan 16, from 9:30 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm in the Mercyhurst College Ceramics Lab, Zurn 120A. He will lecture on his work that evening at 6 in Zurn 214. He is senior instructor and chair of the Ceramics Program at Shawnee State University. The events are free and open to the public.

The Highmark Quad Games Cross County Ski and Snowshoe Race has been postponed again due to lack of snow. Yes, Erie and lack of snow. The event was originally scheduled for Jan 8th, then pushed back to Jan 15 is now scheduled for Jan 22. $5 it will be pushed back again as temps will be warm all week.

‘Brokeback Mountain’ opens at Tinseltown in Erie, Pa on January 27. Good job by Bobbo to find the info.

Mike Machuga of Erie is in the finals of the Professional Bowlers Association 2006 Dick Weber Open. He’ll take on Chris Loschetter in the first match at 1 pm on ESPN, just as the Steelers game is starting.

In the finals of the 23rd annual McDonald’s High School Basketball Classic, Rufus King defeated Erie Cathedral Prep 65-48 to win the chpionship. In the consolation game, Mount Vernon got the win over Chester 76-67.

Freshman forward Chris Trafford’s 8th goal of the season, 3:15 into overtime, gave the Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team a 4-3 verdict over Connecticut Saturday night and a sweep of its two-game weekend series.

The Gannon men’s basketball team defeated Northwood 66-55. At 8-8 Gannon has no chance of finishing above 500 for the season.

The Mercyhurst Lakers men’s basketball team defeated Saginaw Valley State 67-63. Jeff Daisley scored a career-high 20 points.

The Gannon women’s basketball team routed Northwood 78-52.

The Mercyhurst women’s basketball team lost to Saginaw Valley State 83-67. Senior guard Cassie Seth joined the exclusive 1,000-point club.

Why have no strong candidates stepped forward to challenge Matthew Good or John Evans? Both those idiots deserve nothing less than being voted out of office! Yet, where are the challengers? Sue Weber would have been a strong challenger to Good, and she decided not to run.

Almost any site you need a registration to read, including Go Erie, you can get a (free) login and password from a site called Bug Me Not: http://www.bugmenot.com/index.php

This way you won't be innundated w/ spam and offers and such. I use a Bug Me Not ID for Go Erie and most other news sites.

Dennis - I think it's time you run. I'll make some posters up.

Posted by: Mike at January 15, 2006 1:32 PM

Hey Mike - honestly, I was considering running just for some token opposition. My office has never caught on fire, so far, and I've never voted myself a pay increase.
I was happy to hear that Pontoriero is running.

Anyone see the classic game between the Steelers and Colts? WOW! WHAT A GAME!!! That idiot Mike Borman of WFNN-AM "The Fan" must be kicking himself for saying the Steelers didn't have any chance of winning. That's why they still play the games! I was so glad the Steelers won. I don't think I could take much more of how the Colts were the better team and that the Steelers didn't even have a chance.
TAKE THAT IDIOT OF THE RADIO!!!!!!!!

Posted by: tim at January 15, 2006 8:00 PM

Tim, I don't listen to Erie talk radio anymore, since it's such poor quality. But if you think Mike Bormann is terrible now, you should have listened to him a few years ago when Jim Lecorhick was still the host of the other sports talk show they had on.

Since Lecorchick was thought to be some "sports-guru" in Erie, Mike Bormann could never come up with his own opinions or views on local sports.
Instead, Mike would constantly kiss Jim's ass on the air by bending over backwards to agree with all of Jim Lecorchick's opinions on local sports issues. But it got even worse.

As you may remember (if you heard him), a good part of Jim Lecorchick's show was not really about sports at all. Instead, much of Jim's show was devoted to kissing the asses of a certain group of washed-up ex-star athletes in Erie, high school or college coaches, or athletic directors.

So before long, Mike Bormann was doing the exact same thing, and spending much of his show giving little "plugs" on the air to all Jim's friends!
One of my friends even used to call Mike "Lecorchick's Lapdog" after all of this happened, and I can't say I blamed him. I myself eventually thought it would have made much morse sense for that station to just put Mike and Jim on ONE program and call it "Chico and the Moron" since their shows were so similar. But eventually, I couldn't even listen anymore.

Someone let me know if we EVER get decent talk radio in Erie again! Of course, I'm not holding my breath, that's for sure.

There are atleast two very good talk radio stations in Erie right now.... One's called XM the other is called Sirius ;-)

Posted by: Nick at January 16, 2006 10:57 AM

I agree - there's a ton of great talk on XM - sports, politics (left and right), religious, news (I like the BBC world service) and even the trucker channel. I can't remember the last time I listened to (awful) local radio. There's just something cool about listening to Opie and Anthony non-stop from Erie to Cleveland.

Posted by: Mike at January 16, 2006 12:00 PM

Then there is that buffoon Jeff Johns, who was on the local news talk channel. Is that guy still on the air? Talk about a lack of professionalism! Every other word from that guy was always ahh, umm.., ah..., etc

And he claimed he's been in radio for over 20 years? He's horrible!

Posted by: Matt at January 16, 2006 1:02 PM

You should have heard bormann today. He was practically tripping all over himself saying that he never picked against the steelers just that he didn't think they had a chance. What a moron. What a f***ing moron!! I'm getting Sirius tomorrow!

Posted by: tim at January 16, 2006 8:48 PM

Chico Bormann would have been fired a long time ago if that station gave a damn about the quality of its programing, Tim.

You're not the only one who thinks that station (and Bormann) sucks, and I'm really glad I don't waste my time and listen anymore.

Posted by: Matt at January 16, 2006 10:53 PM

I saw Jeff Johns the other day. Dude is sooo fat he looks like the character "Fat Bastard" from the Austin Powers movies. HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Posted by: tim at January 17, 2006 3:11 PM

I've seen Johns before too. He was a real slob when I saw him. I wouldn't care what he looked like as long as he wasn't horrible on the radio.

I listened to the Mike Bormann chow today for the first time in ages after reading what you wrote. You're right, what a moron!

Hey Tim, can you tell that Bormann also tries to copy Jim Rome in the way he says things and certain words he uses?

Posted by: Matt at January 18, 2006 12:40 AM

Yes Matt, Bormann copies Rome numerous times on the radio. The only saving grace about having such a jack**s on the radio is that Bormann will NEVER, EVER be Jim Rome. Erie's loss is the country's gain! (HAHA!) By the way Matt, I was listening to Rome today...he's thinking about going to Sirius! Thank God! Just got my equipment today! REAL RADIO AT LAST!!!!

Posted by: Tim at January 18, 2006 7:44 PM

Good for you, Tim! I like talk radio, but not the shitty talk radio we have here in Erie. So maybe I'm not far behind you.

Posted by: Matt at January 19, 2006 11:35 PM

I love national talk radio but if I want to talk about my local teams there is only one station to listen to 1330 the fan.Don't hate, get on, man up and voice your opinion.

Posted by: Azim at June 5, 2006 4:23 PM

I think Jim LeCorchick is very good on local talk radio. He's clear and concise in all his statements and everything he say's is intelligent and well thought out. I think Erie talk radio losing Jim is somebody elses gain! I hope we hear him soon in the near future.
