It wasn’t the tears from Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts fans because the Steelers won that streamed down Henderson Road and Route 8, it was a water main break.
Does Mike O’Brien know that he has a bit of a hit with his song “In Erie PA?” The song is making the rounds by email. The file size is large and would cause bandwidth problems if I posted it, so if you haven’t heard it email me at presqueisle (at) gmail.com .
I feel like I should post about the soon to be built race track and slots casino everyday because of the questions I get. Argh. When is the 2006 opening day for the Erie PA casino? Well, they have to build it first. It might be open by Fall of 2007. What is the facility address for Presque Isle Downs? Since there is no facility yet, there is no address. They just recently began pushing around the snow covered dirt doing the excavation work.
Jackie A Anthony, CPA, has joined the accounting firm of Malin, Bergquist and Co, LLP and will work out of their Erie office.
As part of the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day events, a march will be held at Noon on Monday from Perry Square to the Martin Luther King Center, 312 Chestnut St.
Leon Williams, director of intercultural affairs at Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, Iowa, will present “What Would Dr Martin Luther King Say Today? Shattered Dreams” today at 2:30 pm in the gazebo of Dobbins Hall at Penn State Behrend. Williams, an innovative speaker on racial issues and the impact of bias, assumes the persona of Dr King to offer a modern addendum to King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
Nigerian-born artist, Michael Olugbile will present a Ceramic Workshop on Monday, Jan 16, from 9:30 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm in the Mercyhurst College Ceramics Lab, Zurn 120A. He will lecture on his work that evening at 6 in Zurn 214. He is senior instructor and chair of the Ceramics Program at Shawnee State University. The events are free and open to the public.
As part of Gannon’s Executive on Campus program, the university will welcome back to campus, Ralph J Pontillo, on Tuesday, January 17. Pontillo graduated from Gannon University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1985. Currently, Ralph serves as the President and CEO of the Manufacturers’ Association of Northwest Pennsylvania, the largest regional organization of its kind in the United States. The MANP serves more than 4,500 member companies that employ more than 120,000 people.
The Gem City Concert Band will be holding their Winter Concert on Tuesday evening, January 17 at 7:30 at the St. John’s Parish Center, adjacent to St John Lutheran’s Church, 2216 Peach Street. Under the direction of Betty McKinney, the 40-member concert band will perform selections including Young Person’s Guide to John Williams, Armed Forces Salute, Sousa’s The Thunderer, and others. The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted. Please plan to attend. There is plenty of free off-street parking.

Justin Donati scored two power-play goals including the game winning with four seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Toronto St Michael’s Majors to a 4-3 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played Sunday afternoon in front of 1,088 at St Michael’s College School Arena. Ryan O’Marra, Chris Greene and Josh Kidd scored for the Otters who dropped their fourth straight and are now 16-22-3-1 on the season. The Otters return to action Friday and Saturday at the Tullio Arena when they host the Saginaw Spirit and London Knights respectively.
In the opening match of the PBA 2006 Dick Weber Open, Mike Machuga of Erie defeated Chris Loschetter 236-154. In the quarterfinal, Norn Duke beat Machuga, 212-168, striking seven times while Machuga, searching for his second win of the season, opened three times. Mike got a big, oversized check for $5,000.
The Edinboro University men’s basketball team defeated West Chester 65-40. Three Scots scored in double figures, led by Chris Ravello with 17 points.
The Edinboro University women’s basketball team came away with an 87-79 win over overtime on Sunday at West Chester. Agnes Michalow led the way scoring 21 points while adding 11 rebounds.
Dartmouth freshman Justin Slick (Erie, Pa/McDowell) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.87 but the Big Green men’s swimming and diving team fell to Columbia, 144-98.
Mercyhurst College will play host to three collegiate cycling races involving from 175 to 300 riders on April 15 and 16 at North East, PA. The weekend will start the morning of Saturday, April 15, with an individual time trial along Middle and Hirtzel roads. Later that day, the bicyclists will race on Bort Road and follow a modified version of the Welch’s Harvest Classic Course. The Sunday event will be a criterium race at Lake Erie Speedway, a good place for spectators to watch the entire race. The cycling club, Mercyhurst Velo, began two years ago. Mercyhurst Velo is a member of USA Cycling and competes in the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (ECCC).
