Erie PA News and Events for Friday January 20, 2006
There was a house fire at 25th and State Streets. The family of 6 got out safe but they lost everything. Keep your ears open to see which local bank will set up an account for the family and donate a buck or two. Every fire around town brings out the tears from our firemen. The persistent childish whining about how they are so shorthanded and overworked is beyond tiresome. They act as if though they were the victims of a fire. Just shut up already. All the other fire companies around her are all volunteer companies. They don’t have 100 percent of their insurance paid. They spend long hours around their stations, go to training and then have to raise money for their equipment and supplies. They leave their jobs or families at a moments notice and don’t bitch and moan.
Some disturbed guy who hadn’t taken his medication held Erie Police at bay for a couple of hours on Thursday. Police went to arrest him for failing to appear in court on a rape charge when he went psycho. He recently purchased a .38 which he threatened to use and also said he had a can of gas and would set the building on fire. A note from his family ended the standoff. Aren’t background checks supposed to keep this sort of person from buying a gun?
Congratulations go out to Mike Richwalsky (Erie Blogs and Arsenic.net) who is featured in this article from the Christian Science Monitor about RSS. Mike has been interviewed for a number of articles during the past year. I think this is the most ink he’s received since his days as a teen idol when he was in Tiger Beat magazine nearly every week… or maybe that was another Mike.
Thanks to Paige for pointing out the temperature comparison at 4:30 pm yesterday: Sacramento CA 43 degrees, Erie PA 43 degrees. I think the high was 53 in Erie. The water temperature in Presque Isle Bay has climbed to 37 degrees. The hi today might reach 60.
The Quality Market on 6th Street caught their 5th shoplifter in the past two weeks earlier this week. Might want to steal merchandise from another store.
The Cumberland County DA will not retry James Robert Morgan of Erie on 10 sexual abuse charges. His September trial ended in a hung jury. He was charged with molesting 2 pre-teen girls in the early 90’s when he lived in Mount Holly Springs, PA. Morgan is now eligible to resume his job as, of all things, a prison guard.
As an Erie real estate agent, I thought I’d pass along some sales info for Erie County PA. The final figures for 2005 show that 5667 properties were bought and sold for a total of $628, 407,507. This compares to 5493 transactions at $585, 290,355 in 2004.
Scholastic Professional Magazines’ Custom Media Group announced the 33 finalists for the “My Home: The American Dream” contest. The nationwide competition asked students in three age categories - K-Grade 2, Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8 - to explain through images or words how they make their house a home. Kelsey Warner and Collin Steves, both second graders at Jefferson Elementary School in Erie, Pa are finalists. Each finalist receives $100. Three grand-prize winners will be selected from this group of finalists, one representing each age category, each of whom will win $2,000. In addition, the teacher of each grand-prize winner will receive a new digital camera for his or her classroom valued at $600.

I think the reason they were stretched thin was because they had several calls that day. This day wasn't a normal day by far, and they even had assistance from other neighboring townships.
My fiance saw firefighters and police over at the Avalon at about 1:30; What was that about?

Excellent opening paragraph about the Erie Firefighters. I could not agree more! I wish they would just shut up and do their jobs. If they fell unappreciated in their job then welcome to the REAL world. Who out their gets a pat on the back for doing their JOB? I truly admire the volunteer firefighter, they do it (firefighting) because they LOVE IT! The Erie firefighter is just an insolent spoiled brat. The volunteer firefighter gets NO money, NO paid insurance and they dont sit on their ass waiting for a fire/rescue call!! This topic really works me up...bunch of ungrateful jerks! And to top it off..the fire union president (an erie city firefighter) lives in a nice house....IN NORTH EAST!!!!!!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!

I just plain like the more opinionated posts lately. Right on Dennis!
Mike Richwalsky is the one from Tiger Beat. I used to have his photo up on my wall between Duran Duran and Matt Dillon. It had a lip print and "XXX Luv, Mike" in the corner.

That is one thing we will be hearing ALL THE TIME this year. Both the police and the fire department will make statements like "if only the lay-offs hadn't happened, we would not have been stretched as thin as we were today" and so on, and so forth.
Didn't some of the police already try to put the "spin" out there about how the lay-offs would mean LESS police on the street? Even when this isn't even true since more police are being moved from desk jobs back to patrol status?
