Erie Police Officer Aaron Wassell had his cheek bone broken when he responded to a domestic disturbance. David Wassell was charged with assault and a probation violation. Yes, they are related. David is the son of officer Wassell.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board today released an updated preliminary list of the entities and individuals who have submitted applications for licensure for slot machines in PA. The associated applicants for Presque Isle Downs in Erie are: Mountaineer Park Inc, MTR Gaming Group Inc, Scioto Downs Inc, Speakeasy Gaming of Fremont Inc, Speakeasy Gaming of Las Vegas Inc, Presque Isle Downs Inc, David Robert Hughes, Edson Robert Arneault, John Bernard Wolford, John William Bittner, Patrick Joseph Arneault, Robert Allen Blatt and Rose Mary Williams. The companies are all subsidiaries of MTR Gaming and the people are all MTR Gaming directors. MTR Gaming is currently in the early stages of building Presque Isle Downs on Perry Highway (Route 97) just South of I-90 in Summit Township.

National Fuel Gas announced the following management changes, all to be effective February 1. David F Smith has been named President and Chief Operating Officer of National Fuel Gas Company. Smith will continue to serve as President of National Fuel Gas Supply Corporation and Empire State Pipeline. Dennis J Seeley has announced his retirement as President of National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation. Ronald J Tanski will become President of National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation. Tanski will continue to serve as Treasurer and Principal Financial Officer of National Fuel Gas Company.
Phil English, a six-term Republican from Erie Pa, announced he will run for re-election.
Dr James Fitzpatrick is one of four finalists for the position of Dean of Students at the University of Toledo. Fitzpatrick was Director of Student Development at Gannon University when I was a student there.
Now is the time to be looking for Summer jobs, not in May or June. Camp Notre Dame in Fairview PA is accepting applications for Summer employment. Applicants must aged 16 years old and up. Interviews will be held March 18 and April 15.
Catcher Victor Martinez and pitchers Scott Sauerbeck and Rafael Betancourt are scheduled to be part of the Cleveland Indians Caravan that will stop in Erie on today. The Caravan is scheduled to stop at the Dr Gertrude A Barber National Institute, 136 East Ave, starting at 5 pm. There will be a trivia contest as well as stadium food and beverages. Indians players, coaches and staff will arrive at 6:30 pm to answer fans questions and present a highlight film from this past season. Hitting coach Derek Shelton and announcer Matt Underwood also are scheduled to appear. There will be an auction of Indians memorabilia and an autograph session for children. Cost is $7 and will benefit programs at the Barber National Institute. Tickets will be available at the door.
Journalist, poet, activist and lecturer Kevin Powell will speak at Allegheny College on Wednesday, Jan 25 at 7 pm in the Ford Chapel. Powell’s lecture — titled “Looking for Martin: Are Dr King and His ‘Dream’ Still Relevant?” will examine the life of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, the importance of the civil rights movement, and present-day challenges. Kevin was the jerk on the first season of MTV’s “The Real World: New York” in 1992.
For the third year in a row, the Mercyhurst Prep Crew Team will ‘Row for Humanity’, a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. The team, boosters, coaches and friends join in this highly physical and mentally challenging feat to row for a full hour on the ergometer, an indoor rowing machine. The 2006 event will take place Saturday, January 28, from 10 am to 3:30 pm at the Millcreek Mall.
Grammy-winning composer Maria Schneider, with her 17-piece orchestra, will perform Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 8 pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. To order tickets, call the box office at (814) 824-3000.
Tickets for the Mercyhurst/Gannon basketball doubleheader, scheduled Saturday night, January 28 at 6 and 8 pm at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center (MAC), will go on sale to the general public Wednesday, January 25, beginning at 9 am at the MAC. Tickets are priced at $4 for adults and $2 for students. There will be a four-ticket limit. Tickets will remain on sale each day from 9 to 12 and 1 to 4 until sold out. There will be no tickets available at the door the night of the games.
