Bottomline Technologies reported that Erie Insurance Company signed a multi-year contract in the last quarter to use Bottomline’s Web-based legal spend management solution Legal eXchange.

A bipartisan delegation from the House of Representatives visited Camp Fallujah, Iraq, Jan 21-22 to get a firsthand view on the progress made in Iraq and to give Marines and sailors a chance to voice their concerns. Corporal Joseph T Mayo, orders chief and common access card chief, Group Personnel Administration Center, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Headquarters Group, II MEF (FWD), spoke with Rep Todd Platts about experiences with Iraqis and their general consensus about coalition forces in Iraq. Mayo, from Erie, PA, who fulfilled duties at entry control points and the badge office where Marines were responsible for identifying, screening and talking to locals, told both Pennsylvania congressmen that he sees changes in Iraq. He said he sees Iraq becoming a great nation that is able to support itself sometime in the future. “Most of the Iraqis I have come into contact with are grateful for the US forces being here in Iraq,” said Mayo, who’s been in country for 10 months. “They have told me on numerous occasions how they have never known freedom the way they do now. One in specific was the local named Yass. He told me that this is the first time he can speak his mind without fearing death.” (From a story by Cpl Heidi E Loredo.)
Professor Fred Irby, III and the Howard University Jazz Ensemble will play at the Gannon University today, Thursday, Jan 26 as part of Gannon’s Artist-in-Residence program and the Dr Martin Luther King, Jr Commemoration Events. Irby and the Howard Jazz Ensemble will offer a performance workshop for Gannon faculty, staff and students on Jan 26 at 1:30 pm. Then, at 7 pm that evening, the HUJE will perform in a 75 minute concert, which will also be located in the Yehl Alumni Room, Waldron Center. Both the afternoon workshop and the evening concert are free and open to the public.

Tickets for the Mercyhurst/Gannon basketball doubleheader, scheduled Saturday night, January 28, are sold out. The games can be seen on the Image Sports Network (Adelphia Channel 12, Time Warner Channel 20).
Ryan Callahan scored twice to lead the Guelph Storm to a 3-1 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night in front of 3,062 at the Tullio Arena. Mike Blunden netted the lone Otters goal. Erie lost for the eighth straight time.
The Erie Freeze is going to hold its second team tryout for the 2006 season at Family First Sports Park, 8155 Oliver Road, Erie, Pa on January 27 from 11 am to noon. There is a $65 tryout fee. American Indoor Football League players are paid up to $250 per game, with a $50 win bonus.
The league announced that the Syracuse Soldiers were named as the 16th team league. Syracuse will compete in a division with teams from Erie, Pa; Canton, Ohio; Steubenville, Ohio; Troy, Ohio; Johnstown, Pa; Reading, Pa; and Huntington, WVa.
The Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team is ranked 19th in the latest USA Today/American Hockey Division I Poll and tied for 28th in the USCHO.com Poll. The Lakers, 15-8-0 overall and in first place in Atlantic Hockey, have won their last four straight including 7-2 and 7-1 decisions over visiting American International College last weekend.
