Erie PA News and Events for Sunday January 29, 2006

Soon the City of Erie will begin negotiations with Erie Cablevision for the fee in exchange for the ability to run cable in the city rights of way. The way the city negotiates, we could end up paying Time Warner and paying for their health benefits. The city receives no fees for Internet or digital phone services that Erie Cablevision sells. Currently, Time Warner Cable returns 4 percent of its gross revenues to the City of Erie general fund and 1 percent of its gross revenues to Erie Community Access Television. Can the City of Erie afford to subsidize a cable TV channel when they have laid-off 60 police officers and firemen? It will be interesting to see how this is covered locally. The company that publishes the local newspaper was, and mostly likely still is, part owner of Erie Cablevision.

When you mix a great cause with drinking and golf, you come up with the MECA United Cerebral Palsy Barstool Open. It’s time for the 8th Annual Barstool Open. A huge thank you. It only took 5 years. It wasn't the fault of Gannon. The University of Pennsylvania was in charge of it.
