Erie PA News and Events for Thursday February 9, 2006
A quote from Erie City Councilman Pat Cappabianca during last nights council meeting “We (the city) don’t have enough income to meet our expenses.”
Only pre-teens and politicans could say something like that. The pre-teen would ask for an increase in their allowance from their parents. A normal parent would say to stop spending so much. Erie City Council wants to raise out taxes so bad it physically pains the to get through a meeting without doing so. They just seem to think that cutting expenses is not an option. Police and firefighters were cut but there are more people working in city hall than last year. Over 200 city employees are given cell phones at a cost of over $100,000 a year.
I could just see someone going to their boss asking for a raise saying “I need more income to meet my expenses.” After making a couple of quick phone calls to schedule you a CAT scan and a drug test, the boss would say “No you moron, cut your expenses.”
In the past two weeks the city has found over $750,000 worth of bills laying round that needed to be paid. They need to develop a better system than hiding them and hoping they go away.

Someone broke into the Asia Food Center, 601 E 6th St, early this morning. The business had been closed for some time. A number of years ago the business was robbed, the suspects got away and were never found. The police could not give chase because they had the streets blocked of for a 15K run.
National Fuel released figures on degree heatng days in the Erie, PA area. The 4th quarter of 2005 registered 2,048, 1.6 percent warmer than normal. The same period in 2004 was 2.6 percent colder than normal at 1997. To calculate the heating degree days for a particular day, get the day’s average temperature by adding the day’s high and low temperatures and dividing by two. If the number is above 65, there are no heating degree days that day. If the number is less than 65, subtract it from 65 to find the number of heating degree days.

great blog, read it daily.....actually there are fewer people in city hall this year than last, probably 20 afscme and white collar for sure ( 9 alone from sewer billing). the mayors office is down 2 workers in 2006 versus 2005. code enforcement lost some folks as did the janitorial staff. true, every police officer has a cell phone (for the nextel capabilities) and that skews the total, cell phones among white collar and afscme is down. even the fire department has reduced the number of phones recently. parks/streets use nextel rather than dedicated $500 motorola radios.
