You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to be speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense. But you might be asked to sleep with the attorney who will provide you cash if you’re short on funds.
Former Erie County Democratic Chairman, former Erie City Councilman and former Erie County Public Defender Ian Murray was re-hired as an Erie County Public Defender. Murray was fired nearly 12 years ago as a public defender for having sex with a client he was defending and giving her money afterwards. Not sure if him getting this job is good news or bad news for law abiding citizens. As for you criminals, hey, he kept himself out of jail.

A magic hall of fame might be located in Erie. Now this comes totally out of left field. Can’t wait for the press conference to hear the details about this one. Erie County Executive Mark DiVecchio let Fast Eddie Rendell make the announcement. Still sounded like he was telling a joke. He did point out that the famous magician Harry Kellar was an Erie native. Anything that will attract anyone from out of town to visit is good for the area.

Tickets go on sale today at 10 am for the March 22 Sheryl Crow concert at the Erie Civic Center. Thanks to John Nittolo Productions for bringing her to town.

Here are the January 2006 statistics for January from the Greater Erie Board of REALTORS: 254 properties sold for $26,951,813 million. In January 2005, 267 properties sold for $32,280,261 million. Don’t read too much into this. When the snow flies, nobody buys. December to Valentines Day is slow. Bargain hunters and people being transferred by companies in and out of the area are the main buyers this time of year. There are currently 1170 residential properties listed in Erie County which is about a 3 month supply.

More fun Erie facts and area trivia. There are approximately 30,000 acres of vineyard in the Lake Erie region of New York and Pennsylvania grown on 840 farms, making it the largest grape growing region outside of California.
(Note: an acre is about the size of a football field: 1.095, end zone to end zone.)

Michael T Victor was named as the 11th President of Lake Erie College in Painesville Ohio. Victor formerly served as Dean of the Walker School of Business at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania and will begin the transition as President over the next month. Prior to joining Mercyhurst, he served as adjunct professor of business at Gannon University from 1991-2000 and assistant professor/executive in residence at Gannon from 1991-2002. From 1988-1991, he was co-owner of Pyramid Industries in Erie. Between 1988 - 2000, Victor served Pyramid Industries as president, then president/CEO and later as CEO and chairman.

For a short time in the early 1980’s there were VideoDiscs and LaserDiscs which were about 3 times the diameter of the modern DVD’s. For you old, old timers the size of an LP album vs the size of a 45 single, 12 inches in diameter. The big electronic firms thought they would replace VCR’s because being digital, the picture was much better. Christopher J Poux, who was an engineer that graduated from then Gannon College in Erie, worked on the Engineering staff at the RCA VideoDisc Division. He joined the division in 1980. RCA produced the equipment from about 1981-86.

The 5th Annual Penn State Behrend “Spirit Against Cancer” Dance and Cheer Competition Competition will be held Feb 11 at 10 am at the Penn State Behrend Junker Center. In memory of Becky Hubler Decker, Penn State Behrend hosts the competition to help raise money for the American Cancer Society for research to find the cure for different types of cancer. The Experience Erie Children’s Museum, 420 French St, is holding a Valentine Making Workshop today, Saturday Feb 11 from 11am-3pm. Children are invited to make their own valentine out of recycled materials for loved ones. Each will get an envelope to mail their valentine. This event is free with museum admission of $4 per person, free to members.

Sarah Backstom
The 12th annual Sarah Backstom Memorial Girls and Women’s Hockey Tournament takes place this weekend. There are 60 teams competing in 13 divisions with over 1,000 players. Every hotel room within 50 miles is taken.

The Gannon University Schuster Theatre will host seven performances of “Cats” tonight and Sunday and Friday-Sunday, Feb 17-19. Thursday-Saturday performances will begin at 8 pm, Sunday performances at 3 pm. Tickets are $5 for reserved seating. The Feb 19 performance will be the Alex Clemente Theatre Fundraising Event, tickets for this show only are $15. Proceeds will benefit the Alex Clemente Fund for Performing and Related Arts. The musical Grand Hotel is being performed at the Erie Playhouse Feb 11-12 and 15-19. For tickets and info call (814) 454-2852.

“Grease” will be performed in the Mercyhurst D’Angelo Performing Arts Center at Mercyhurst College tonight at 7:30 pm and Feb 12 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are available for advance purchase at the box office and will also be available at the door. Prices for are $12.50 for adults and $1 for Mercyhurst students. Call the Performing Arts box office at 814-824-3000 for tickets.

The American Legion, Millcreek Post 773, 4109 West 12th St, Erie PA, is holding a Homeless Veterans Bennifit Dance on Saturday February 11 at 8 pm. The cost for the 2nd annual Birthday and Valentine’s Day dance with music by DJ Bobby J is $5 per person. The public is invited to attend, drinks at club prices. All proceeds benefit the Liberty House For Homeless Veterans, 550 West 7th St, in Erie. Liberty House is a safe haven for the men and women who bravely served our country and are now in need of help.

The Highmark Quad Games Cross County Ski and Snowshoe Race is now scheduled for Sunday Feb 19 at 1 pm at Peek’n Peak. The event was originally scheduled for Jan 8, then pushed back to Jan 15, then Jan 22, then Jan 29, and then Feb 5.

When you mix a great cause with drinking and golf, you come up with the MECA United Cerebral Palsy Barstool Open. It’s time for the 8th Annual Barstool Open. This year’s event is set to take place on Saturday, February 18, 2006. Download your 2006 Barstool Open Registration Form today. If you haven’t heard about the event before, here is a quick run down. Teams of 4 people walk bar to bar, playing a miniature golf hole at each bar. The bars get pretty creative on the designs.
The registration fee is $25 per person, $100 per team. You must bring a putter and a couple of golf balls. Almost 1,000 people participated in last years event making the Erie event the largest in the country.

Freshman Erin Kerner (Erie, Pa Mercyhurst Prep) scored a career-high 30 points to lift the Quinnipiac University women’s basketball to an 81-51 win over St Francis (Pa) on Friday night at the DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pa. Kerner is having an incredible year. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 17-5 (12-1 NEC). Quinnipiac was picked to finish 5th in the league and they’re running away with it.

Mike Blunden scored twice to lead the Erie Otters to a 4-1 win over the Kitchener Rangers in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night in front of 5,926 at The Aud. Bret Nasby added a goal and an assist in the Otters win while Sean O’Connor rounded out the scoring. The Otters complete weekend action tonight when the Sarnia Sting visit the Tullio Arena for a 7:30 pm start.

Maybe it's b/c City of Erie government knows how to make taxpayers' money disappear? Or so many elected officials doing the ol' "nothing up this sleeve, nothing up that sleeve..."

I think you have the date wrong on the quad games. I read in the paper and on the quad game website that it is scheduled for Feb. 19 at 1:00.
