Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday February 15, 2006

Posted by Dennis on February 15, 2006

So you’re a high school punk that doesn’t want to say ‘Want fries with that?’ or ‘Thanks for shopping at Wal-Mart’ for the next 50 years. The answer is to get an education. There is a good article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette today on how to get into the college of your choice. The writer interviewed a number of college admissions officers including Scott Friedhoff, vice president for enrollment and Jennnifer Winge, director of admissions at Allegheny College, William Eilola, dean of enrollment services at Gannon University, and Travis Lindahl, associate director of admissions at Mercyhurst College.
A visit to the school can greatly enhance your chances of being accepted. Reasons for rejection include them get paperwork with the name of the wrong school on it. Write in proper English. Not ‘I would <3 to gO To uR Skol.’ If your email address is 69princess@yahoo, get a better one. Some colleges even check MySpace, Xanga, etc to check on prospective students.

Sergeant Mindo D Estrella
A Marine from Company F, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment was awarded the 2nd Marine Division Association’s Lt Gen Julian C Smith Award for his leadership excellence while serving as squad leader for 1st Squad, 4th Platoon. Sergeant Mindo D Estrella (Erie Central High School), a 22-year-old Erie, Pa, native was presented the award in Fallujah, Iraq. SGT Estrella has served with the battalion since February 2003. He received the Navy Marine Corps Achievement medal for his actions in Afghanistan. Throughout his deployment to Iraq in 2005, he continually displayed his hallmark tenacity and uncanny leadership abilities. From the period of Sept 1, 2005 until wounded on Nov 12, 2005, he led his squad on more than 50 combat patrols, numerous house searches, and a variety of intelligence based operations. While on patrol he was injured by an enemy grenade. His unselfishness was demonstrated by his concern for the well-being of his squad, even while wounded. He is currently back at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC, undergoing extensive rehabilitation and awaiting the day he will be reunited with his squad. He has re-enlisted. Another quick word about e-mail addresses: as an editor, I see a lot of submissions of long pieces of writing (stories, essays, articles, etc.) that are submitted to our e-zine via e-mail. E-mail programs like AOL truncate paragraphs once they reach a certain length,. If you intend to send you college essay or other important writing from an AOL address, you should know that your piece probably won't arrive whole.

Also AOL bounces legitimate e-mails. Anyone who sends us a submission from an AOL e-mail address won't get their notification letter b/c AOL bounces our site (we are not spammers). Imagine your acceptance to college, a request for more information to complete your application, etc. being bounced.

I think Gmail is the best. Yahoo and Hotmail are also fine. Like you said, nothing cutesy. I think by the time you're applying to college, you need an e-mail address of your name, like sjparker@whatever or sarahjess@wherever. A nice domain with a simple professional-looking website could be an inexpensive alternative and would get you an e-mail address (or five).

Just my professional $.02 ;)

What do you mean, no one went to the Red River Roadhouse to eat? They had the best rolls and butter ever, and their steaks were pretty damn good too!

My fiance and I had our first date there; We were kinda sad to hear it's closing. :(
