Erie PA News and Events for Friday February 17, 2006
This could be the first tax I have ever agreed with. State Representative John Pallone (D-New Kensington) introduced House Bill 2454 which will levy a $100 fee on every resident in communities with 9,000 or more people that require state police because they are too cheap to have their own police force. My state taxes are going to people that don’t want to pay for their own police force. For way too long people have been leaving the cities for the suburbs and their lower taxes. They want the same services, they just don’t want to pay for them. This could affect residents living in Harborcreek, Fairview and Summit.
Sue Weber of Millcreek wants the Millcreek Water Authority want to merge with the Erie Water Authority. We’ll get on that as soon as Millcreek Township merges with the City of Erie. Generations of City of Erie taxpayers have paid for the infrastructure. Millcreek taxpayers just want to pay less for their water than they do now.
Stan Shumway of Erie Management Group was recently in the United States territory of American Samoa. He and two other businessmen from Safelite Autoglass inquired about setting up a call center there. “Erie Management Group is a private, strategic investor whose mission encompasses two equally weighted purposes: generating economic expansion and high quality, skilled employment in and around Erie, Pennsylvania and realizing economic returns commensurate with investment risk.” Don’t think one counts being in and around Erie.
Accuride Corporation came out with their earnings today. One of the expenses was “$0.3 million related to exiting the tire-mold business at our facility in Erie, PA.” The company has a couple of plants around Erie. Hope they aren’t moving something out of town.
Woodcraft Industries, a hardwood parts manufacturer, is opening a plant in Pymatuning Township, Mercer County and will employ up to 185 people within three years. Woodcraft will be settling in a 88,000 square foot facility on nine acres in the Greenville-Reynolds Industrial Park. This is a different company than the Woodcraft Industries in State College PA.
It hit a record high of 62 degrees in Erie PA. Tonights expected low - 18 degrees.
It was announced that Saint Andrew School will close. No surprise there. There were fewer than 100 students at the school. If there is no big endowment and students, parents and alumni don’t support a school, it closes. This was the school that former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge went to. Wonder if they ever asked him to raise funds for the school.
Why advertise when you can just put out a well written press release and make it seem like news. Erie therapist Curtis Bannister and his wife Stephanie own two properties on an island in the Bahamas. They want people to rent them out so they put out a press release. Hurricane Katrina crushed the area last year and Hurricane Frances caused very heavy damage in 2004. The island was named after a pirate. Maybe the legacy continues.

Teams of 4 people walk bar to bar, playing a miniature golf hole at each bar. The bars get pretty creative on the designs.
