Erie PA News and Events for Tuesday February 21, 2006
The Erie County Public Defender’s office is a mess. Now I don’t want some slick lawyer getting criminals off but I don’t want to see innocent people behind bars. Ian Murray was re-hired to be an assistant in the office he was fired from nearly 12 years ago. Now, Chief Public Defender Tony Logue was caught lying and giving poor representation to a client. Logue claimed he had checked on an alibi, when in fact he didn’t. It could have and should have led to an acquittal. The guy might now have been innocent but it appears he wasn’t quite quilty of everything. The story is from the Erie newspaper but I didn’t see it on their site so here is the link to the Associated Press story.
The University of Pittsburgh has received a $5 million gift from alumnus John M Petersen and his wife, Gertrude, to create an endowment supporting research in nanoscale science and technology at Pitt’s Institute of NanoScience and Engineering, now the Gertrude E and John M Petersen Institute of NanoScience and Engineering. John Petersen, the retired president and chief executive officer of the Erie Insurance Group in Erie, Pa, earned the Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Pitt in 1951.
The city settled with the federal government over the police agility test. The city taxpayers have to pay $170,000 over a couple of years into a fund for the women that couldn’t climb over a 6 foot fence and failed the agility test and also give priority to hiring of five females. I’m surprised the payment was that low. I’d figured it would have been over a half million dollars. Since Erie has 26 laid-off cops have have to hired back first, it could be a decade or two before any females are hired.
